I was having somewhat similar experiences until somewhat recently (in relation to the MTV days). I happened upon my first Mountain Goats CD in a thrift store circa 2010. It was Tallahassee, now one of my favorite albums of all time.

Sometimes it’s just that there’s no large disadvantage. If a trait doesn’t significantly impact the organism’s ability to reproduce it’ll just hang around. Kind of like the “why 4 limbs and not 6 or 8 or 2?” question. There isn’t an advantage to 4, there’s no disadvantage.
