Science is clearly political. The more we ignore this, the more we allow political decisions in which science is suppressed to maximize corporate profits at the sacrifice of people's health and lives. Speak up!

From SCOTUS ruling that it's ok to ignore scientists, to the minimizing of COVID, the growing rejection of vaccines, the increasing restrictions on abortion access, and the lack of sufficient action on climate, the US is really is going all in on science denial. Dark times.

From the food we eat to the air we breathe, federal regulations are needed to save lives. The SCOTUS Chevron decision that allows courts to overrule experts at agencies, shows that ultimately governments care more about industry profits than our health.

Banning masks has nothing to do with preventing crime. Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, and everyone there wears a mask regularly.

Even before mask bans become law, simply the act of politicians speaking about mask wearers as criminals is stigmatizing a critical public health tool, and encouraging harassment of marginalized groups. That is incredibly reckless and making our cities more unsafe.

There is zero evidence mask bans are effective against crime or hate. But there's a lot of evidence that shows banning masks will put everyone's health at risk, and increases harassment and targeting of higher risk people and communities of color. Mask bans make cities LESS safe.

When leaders talk about banning masks for safety, they ignore the safety of many diverse communities. People who are higher risk, and Asian people have been attacked for wearing masks. Black and Brown communities are disproportionately targeted by police. Safety means EVERYONE.

This is such a misinformed and biased response.
(1) EVERYONE is at risk of health impacts of COVID, other viruses, pollution etc.
(2) EVERYONE has the democratic right to participate in protests, and take precautions when doing so, no matter their health status.

The erasure of COVID by the entertainment industry has played a huge role in sanctioning government abandonment of public health. Creatives are complicit in the ongoing harm caused by COVID. What a difference it would make if they actively portrayed the pandemic in their work.

Wow. A restaurant in Chicago O’Hare, one of the biggest airports in the world, banned an infectious disease doctor from entering because they were wearing a mask. This is unacceptable.

If our leaders were really interested in making cities more safe, instead of funding increased surveillance and introducing useless laws like mask bans, they would:
✅ Fund public health
✅ Fund libraries
✅ Fund education
✅ Fund affordable housing
✅ Fund public transport

Politicians say mask bans should come back as pre-COVID, they were law since 1845.
But scientists discovered viruses in the 1890s, discovered how they worked in the mid-1900s, and discovered SARS in the 2000s.
Mask bans are outdated, anti-science laws that belong in the past.

New York City's libraries can't fix broken A/C during a heatwave, subways have halted making more stations accessible, but instead of trying to fix these critical problems, the Mayor is focused on a useless mask ban that doesn't improve safety, and in reality makes it worse.

"Truth tellers are the Achilles heel of collective denial.
And so those who wear masks are ridiculed, scientists reporting on COVID-19 risks are cast as fearmongers, and those with long COVID are dismissed as having anxiety disorders."
Fantastic piece on the tactics behind denial by sociologists.

A mask ban makes our communities LESS safe.
It makes everyone more at risk of COVID and other health concerns.
It increases harassment of higher risk people, Asian people, and many others.
It increases profiling of Black and Brown communities.

As usual Asian people have been left out of the discussion about masks and hate. Asian people have been attacked throughout the pandemic for wearing a mask. A mask ban would further stigmatize mask wearing and encourage further harassment and violence against mask wearers.

Despite government abandonment, COVID conscious advocates and mask blocs have done an amazing job educating people, distributing free masks, and holding COVID safe events. Instead of supporting this important public health work, governments are making it even harder with mask bans. Ridiculous.

Pre-pandemic laws banning masks from group events were always harmful. We should have learned from the pandemic that we need to do more to normalize public health tools like masks. After seeing so much death and harm that is continuing, it makes no sense to roll back mask laws.

This is absolutely shameful! New York has suffered so much from COVID, and COVID is not over. We should be normalizing and depoliticizing masks, not banning them.

COVID is not over. Scientists are worried about bird flu. We need to be ready for the next pandemic. Right now we need to depoliticize and normalize mask-wearing. North Carolina’s anti-mask bill recklessly does the exact opposite.

With North Carolina's anti-mask bill on the verge of passing, now is one of the most important times than ever to wear a mask. The fewer people who wear masks, the easier it makes it for right wing politicians to recklessly ban them and put everyone's health at risk.
