Colleague: what are you going to see? Me: Longlegs, it’s a horror movie with Nicolas Cage Colleague, not joking: is it a documentary?

I very much enjoyed Longlegs, but based on the audience sample of the five people I saw it with it’ll be a bit divisive.

Do these years come off the start, end or middle of one’s life? I’m ok with losing 2013-2014 if we get to choose.

I just heard them say something about how stripping things of context, eg promoting a “Patrick Bateman workout” to look like a ripped Christian Bale, tend to remove their meaning and how that’s the difference between content and art. I’m delighted. They get it.

A cultural commentator I’ve followed and respected for years until recently would casually say “content” to refer to books, movies, etc. It bugged me. It’s one of those terms that reduces art to product, to be carved up, packaged & sold like sausages. I feel the same way about “IP” and “franchise.”

There isn't even any point to making movies like THE BROOD or POSSESSION now, divorced men no longer have to use art as an outlet for all their anger and sorrow, they have the Cybertruck.

The best tweet of the day… no, the month. I really didn’t know that the neo-Nazis had these many sympathizers. If you are still wondering how millions of people perished in concentration & death camps, well, it starts with people like this guy. Yes, I’m saying it & meaning it quite literally.

Fair enough regarding Golriz - I agree. I’m not sure how possible it is to look into the employer history of a candidate’s spouse or partner, to be honest. The specific cases here seem to have gone to the ERA just a few weeks before last year’s election so they were unlikely to have been picked up.

Their biggest scandal this year was about a human rights lawyer in her third parliamentary term. There’s only so much that screening will turn up. What specifically should they have done to find out about the Dorene Tana situation earlier?

I suspect the reason that the Greens don’t drop in polling after one of their MPs has a scandal is because they move swiftly to investigation and then tō accountability, in stark contrast to most other NZ political parties.

IMO anyone who says something like this should watch the short documentary “Meeting the Man: James Baldwin in Paris” where the belligerent director complains about having to wait so long between books and Baldwin responds. Speed of writing isn’t an indicator of talent or character.

If they copy the UK closely enough, NZ Labour can spend a mere nine years languishing in opposition until National screws up badly enough to lose on their own.

Does evidence show that capital punishment is an effective deterrent? No, not at all. And yet people who say “make Nazis afraid again” ignore this as much as “string ‘‘em up” tough on crime types. Don’t get me wrong, I hate Nazis, but let’s find a tactic that actually works.

Let’s have a real life example of “killing the villain.” Did Nicolae Ceausescu deserve to die? As much as almost any murderous dictator, yes. Did his prompt execution save his accomplices from being held accountable for their own crimes? Yes, of course.

This was literally the post above the one where I said I oppose capital punishment in all its forms. Forty years unjustly in prison is unconscionable. Having to apologise to her corpse would have been much worse. “Kill the villain” is cartoon thinking when set next to real life stories.

I get the feeling behind this but it still makes me uneasy. Capital punishment is always racist, classist & unjust and people who kill their enemies tend not to stop at the "bad" ones, there's always someone else who "needs" to be killed. Also the flip side of this trope is Death Wish.
