The family of Henrietta Lacks can pursue compensation from a pharmaceutical company over its use of her HeLa cells, which have been influential in modern medicine after being taken without her consent decades ago
My favorite little known factoid about her cells is she is getting subtle revenge cuz they contaminate EVERYTHING. If you have any HeLa cells in your lab, good chance everything you have is actually a HeLa cell and you better double check your samples
Good; drug companies and universities owe an immeasurable debt to Ms. Lacks, and by extension, her heirs. I'm sure millions of people owe her their lives.
The book written about Ms. Lacks is both tragic and fascinating.
I’m happy to hear her family can pursue their lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company.
I sincerely hope they prevail.
I remember we had to debate this in high school, whether scientists taking Henrietta Lacks's cells was ethical and if the family should at least be compensated. Even the teacher thought it was alright and that they shouldn't be paid.
"But science."
"But I'm tired of science doing fucked up shit."
