Reposting because this story is so wild:
A scientist for the company that created Scotch Tape & Post-its discovered its toxic chemicals in human blood in the ‘90s.
Despite findings showing widespread contamination, her research was stopped by executives who kept the information secret
This IS wild. Scary. It's really hard to justify capitalism when corporations make decisions that benefit their pockets over the health of their own customers. 😲
Just like Dupont. The movie Dark Waters is a shocking true story about the forever chemicals that the underfunded EPA left it to industry to regulate themselves. But they didn't, even as they lied that they were.
Stephen A: now you know that I don’t believe in the death penalty
Skip: of course
Stephen A: it’s barbaric and ineffective as a deterrent
Skip: yes it is
Stephen A: BUT-
Gobsmacked that Hansen started Googling the negative impacts of PFOS and PFAS on humans only AFTER the 2021 airing of the John Oliver show. HOLY COW. Denialism to the max!
Forever chemicals are a problem, and the foremost reason why immortality for humans will not come until we figure out cloning, mind transfer... or clean up our shitty act.
Because none of them will end up in prison for it.
I think people have a hard time comprehending just how much money 3M made on this line of chemicals. Any fine or settlement is just a cost of doing business.
If you want shit like this to stop happening, start putting CEOs, and COOs in prison.
This reads like an introduction to the history and philosophy of science. What does it mean to know? When do you know you know? What is the relationship between measurement/ observation and knowledge? Between data and explanation/ understanding? Asking and answering?
The bigger jaw dropper is that they already knew before her research. Per Johnson's claim, he detected it in the general population as early as the late '70s.
In cases like this, 3M should be fined out of existence and all of the executives put in jail for life. This is a crime against humanity and it should be treated as such.
Feel like there should be some sort of extremely strict law that allows/forces research like this to be published, including anti retaliation laws for the researcher and heafty (100 mil+ fines and imprisonment for executives) for not publishing critical research like this.
There is a book by a journalist here in Germany, @christianstoecker.de: Men who burn the world. This seems to me to be the first part of a series. The next volume could be called: Men who poison the world.
the fact that 3M exists after this information was made public is absolute proof that our government has completely failed us.
(you know, assuming you looked at everything else the US did in the last forever and said "eh, that's ok")
Someone on Facebook said it best. We only need to eat one or two billionaires and CEO's in the streets, and the others will get in line pretty quick.
Also, I think Dark Waters is still on Netflix right now.
Courts decided companies were people, now companies expect to be treated like gods. They buy politicians, buy judges and Justices, and literally get away with murder.
Everything... EVERYTHING.....Is bad for you ..nothing...NOTHING is safe to use, ingest or look at ...so, what's the options? Stop breathing, stop eating, stop looking, stop living?
It's never in a business's interest to self regulate when they have little or no consequences.
You're right, it is wild. Wild that it's the status quo.
