Some argue that the devil/Mara knows this. They say he's enlightened, and the fall of humanity was planned in accordance with God's wishes. Some even say that the god of Eden wishes to enslave humanity in ignorance, while his adversary strives to set us free. What to believe? Where do we turn?

Yet, his ignorant behavior creates your enlightenment. Your struggle to be free is how you overcome ignorance. Beings who never suffer remain ignorant. This is the meaning of the "fruit of knowledge of good and evil" offered to humanity in Eden. We must experience painful divisions to become wise.

The Mara (devil, death, material world, ignorance) restrains your enlightenment because he doesn't see the benefit to him. He doesn't see how your liberation liberates him. His focus on having control causes his own misery, worrying over losing that control. Restraining you restrains him.
