can anybody who knows a lot about animals and the environment tell me if there's an ethically sound way of giving a little treat to a squirrel ?

There isn’t one, unless they are in a zoo enclosure. There is more harm than good in feeding wildlife.

On the flip side is there anyway to stop your neighbour from putting out huge quantities of peanuts and attracting squirrels and assorted other less desirable fauna?

During the ice storm I put out suet pine cone feeders for birds and squirrels. Fun craft project with the little.

Don't recommend. My grandmother used to do this and then when she went on vacation, the squirrels shredded the railing on the deck and ripped the screen off the patio door. If you feed the birds, they'll get their treat, so maybe just do that?

it depends if you're in a built up area... in the countryside, go ahead! teach generations to trust you! but you can't be sure other people won't let their kids or pets hurt them..

You build a small squirrel sized picnic table and put nuts on it. You’re allowed to put a GoPro to record their eating.

The squirrels near me live in the GIANT-ASS WALNUT TREE in my yard. They don't need no stinkin' treats. That said--yes, nuts.

Check your state laws. In some states feeding wildlife is illegal. Bird feeders are typically exempt.

A squirrel that lives in a tree outside my front window sits on the sill & looks for me. I keep a can of unsalted nuts by the door & when he hears it open he scrambles right up for his handful. So cute.
