"No more basic fruit bowl!" from a reel about making a fancy stack of fresh lemons adorned with flowers. Look, darlin'. My fruit bowl is for 3 sad bananas, a bruised apple no one wants to eat, a slowly desiccating orange that no one remembers buying. Aesthetics abandoned this fruit bowl long ago.

I do understand that we live in systems that actively exclude disabled people. The work he's done with various therapies has made the systems somewhat easier to navigate. The space between what we ask him to do and what we offer to accommodate is so fucking slippery. There is no way to be correct.

I am beyond tired of the undercurrents of anxiety that people send my way when we discuss my son's abilities. So what if a particular skill is beyond his ability? Is it actually important that he does this thing in this particular way? We can find another way to achieve the same goal, ffs!

In my relationship with my son & his disability, I've spent many hours on activities intended to make him "more functional". Those hours weren't without joy, delight, discovery. But what if I'd been taught how to enjoy who he is, exactly as he is, without constantly nudging him to be someone else?

I feel like I just barely have a grip on allocating time for the "normal" aspects of our routine. I have a narrow margin of wiggle room for the things that inevitably throw off the routine. My energy & creativity for making PT fun for my son burnt out years ago (I've been doing this his whole life.)

My absolute blessing of a cousin is studying to be a therapy assistant. She's been coming to my son's physio appointments to get hands-on experience. Yesterday, she offered to come up with ideas for incorporating his PT exercises into other routine activities. She's my new favorite person. 💖

The Ventilationist school of architecture mostly works in low-oxygen water; they want as much flow-through as possible. They disdain the Sedimenti, who half-bury their buildings in the mud, barely peeping out, with only one door and no windows. And EVERYONE is confused by the Plasticists.

It's so strange to talk to them, too -- they don't think like humans. Whenever one of their beautiful buildings gets destroyed, they cheer (because it's served its purpose) and then they rush to snatch the building materials. Nothing is wasted, nothing is overlooked. Not the smallest speck of glass.

My kids got to see me perform on stage for the first time. My mom hadn't seen me play in public for a solid 15 years. I'm not sure my spouse had seen me play for an audience in that long (he hears practices, though). It was actually pretty special to have them all there.
