swing voters and undecided voters basically by definition think about and engage with politics differently than anyone on this site, anyone who writes for the ny times, and the vast majority of the times’ subscribers. otherwise they wouldn’t be undecided/swing voters.

As a 24 year old trying to find a career I became very excited about politics circa Bernie 2015. I think the currently irreconcilable disconnect between policy positions, messaging outcomes, and voter opinion, has never been dealt with, and we are fucked until we get some sort of handle on it all…

I find his arguments persuasive, I don’t think it will happen. I also think it would have to be Harris if it did happen. But I ALSO remain confused by the insistence we can be sure we know what the biggest risks are here one way or another. I just think everyone is very bad at predicting things!

Okay! I mean I just can only interpret that as a call to shut the fuck up, do some voter outreach, vote, and pray. But I can understand why anyone with a larger platform than me would be wondering if there might be better solutions when the downside risk is as serious as Trump.

I have been bewildered by the cocky insistence from people I normally agree with that there’s NO value in discussing a Biden replacement, that it’s purely a harmful fantasy.
Im sorry- many of us are concerned and disturbed! Real voters, not just the NYT and “Dem elites.” We are terrified!

Apparently this kind of talk is “needless panic” and we should “eat shit because we can’t eat anything else”

Yes this has been the dynamic of the parties my entire life! It’s asymmetrical warfare in a number of different ways! I don’t see why contempt for dem elites being pathetic also means we can’t seriously reckon with Biden’s inability to construct a cogent argument with words.

I genuinely don’t understand this frustration and contempt for the panic. There are real democratic voters who are terrified of a trump presidency who are reacting to Bidens performance, it’s not some manufactured media narrative. People are scared! It’s a human response from the actual electorate!

I think Harris would be a stronger candidate, and it seems like the one thing the left and center wings of the party agree about right now is Bidens age issues. I realize it’s unlikely, but the existential Trump threat is exceptional and deserves an exceptional approach. Why sleepwalk into the fire?

Every article like this is like- are you a savvy cultural critic making a startling observation about how things aren’t what they used to be? Or are you just old?
Like sorry you don’t have any special interests that give you a subculture to belong to. May I introduce you to a 15 year old?

As someone who graduated high school in the middle of Obama’s first term- I think my specific generation ended up with a lot of naive optimism. But then in reaction to that, and in reaction to Trump, the next generation that came of age with Trump absorbed a lot of naive pessimism.

I doubt anyone reading this will care, but this has always struck me as a misunderstanding of how LLMs work and what they're actually good at.
If you really wanted it to evaluate the count of letters in given text, you can do that by asking it to write itself code to do it accurately:

Genuine question I've had through all of this that I havent seen a ton of engagement with - is there nuance to this when it comes to like, answering opinion polls vs actually voting? Like, don't election year polls that show Muslims in Michigan being upset with Biden have an impact on policy?

Well this is confusing bc everyone seems to be convinced that the Gaza protests and Bidens polling are directly related, but I’m happy to entertain a world where it’s not that simple, it usually isn’t.

Maybe on social media, maybe in the moment, but I think even here we all underestimate the existence of persuadable lurkers, to our own peril. And I don’t think minimizing people’s reasonable discomfort and anger about our contributions to the horrors in Gaza helps anything.

Ok so- are we just going to complain about them, they complain about Biden, and we all cry about it until the fascist wins? Everyone could use an iota more empathy and respect for the people they think are idiots and crybabies

I mean yes, there's clearly a constituency that is very disturbed by Biden's comfort funding a genocidal campaign that has lasted not a couple months – *half a year*. And I agree they're not being pragmatic! But are we just going to whine and call them idiots for six months until Trump wins?

it’s almost a prisoner’s dilemma type problem where the withheld-vote-messaging is only effective as a tactic if there is a real belief that there will be follow through- like the efficacy of the persuadable group saying they won’t vote has some relationship to the people who still end up not voting
