You got your Flash Gordon, your cowboy outlaws, your samurai sword fights, your Isaac Asimov robots, and World War 1 flying ace dog fighting in my hero's journey. But now, the franchise's own nature, with established rules, doctrines, and style guides, makes it very hard to add more to that recipe.

This is why I always thought the EU was incredibly boring. It was just more "Star Wars." Whereas the movies were this indelible mix of Golden Age SF, Silver Age Marvel, samurai films, WWII movies, westerns, plus every kind of visual media imaginable from propaganda to industrial design.

Reminds me of the whole "photocopy of a photocopy" saying. Remixing/copying itself just washes it out over time.

It's why I've long felt like Star Wars side stuff gets better when it cuts some of that stuff out to then either focus real hard on one or two aspects, or to throw something new into that space. Let parts of the whole flex and develop away from the rest of it.

the last jedi was so exciting, because it looked at all the films before and started asking questions and subverting expectations. then disney brought abrams back to reign things back to corporate style guide.

I've definitely heard this sentiment somewhere before, and now I'm wondering if that was you.

This is definitely why the best stuff that's come from Star Wars in recent memory have leaned into other genres: the Mandalorian is a Western; Andor a Spy Thriller; The Last Jedi a Stern Chase; The Clone Wars series were war diaries. Star Wars is a fantastic canvas but you need to bring fresh paint
