When someone tries to tell you that Trump is actually hilarious and “has great comedic instincts or whatever,” what they’re telling you is that this is the sort of thing they think is funny.
Obviously he's a horrific sociopath, but I feel like you're missing part of his appeal if you refuse to admit he can be funny. "I would like to extend my best wishes to all, even the haters and losers, on this special date, September 11th" is funny. Saying migrants should fight in the pits isn't.
He’s not funny, but he patterns his speeches with the rhythms of Jay Leno’s tonight show monologues, and his followers read that as “funny.” The “Nancy Pelosi—did you hear about this?” opening, then calling her a name, and everyone in the crowd laughs.
reminds me of the people who said rush limbaugh was so funny and when asked for an example of one of his 'jokes' it was something like, "chelsea clinton is ugly"
I can't think of a single thing he ever said that was even constructed to be a joke.
There are many people who think casual and flippant cruelty is a type of humor.
Denying his ability to be funny and sound different from traditional politicians is a trap. Maybe there's something we can learn from how his style allows him to say things that very recently would (correctly!) be disqualifying for a politician and apply it to actually good ideas
Early in the 3.0 era, the PCs overheard this joke between two orc guards:
Guard 1: “How many dwarves it take to light candle?”
Guard 2:”Two. Because dwarves dumb!”
Point was, the guards were too dim to tell a proper joke.
And now, in reality, we have people praising Trump for the same humor.
Comedy often has a target. For many young comedians, it is their family and perhaps ethnicity. For older comedians, it is so often themselves and their own (hopefully) universalizable humanity.
Is making fun of others funny or just mean? What kind of person finds that entertaining?
What a nasty little fucker he is. (Yes, I am using my words.) What he doesn't get, is that survival at poverty level is a sort of combat over resources. He just doesn't get to watch. He wants that because he's a psychopath. (Plenty of psychiatrists have publicly said it) We need a psych vetting body
