You know the reason right? That Pearl came about accidentally out of West and Goth working out her backstory for X?

Interestingly, Chuck D originally said rap is Black America's "TV station". The CNN specification was added later by white people. quoteinvestigator.com/2014/02/11/c...

#RS500 187 A time capsule from the "rap is Black America's CNN"* era and the thing about that is, sitting down to an hour of Black CNN from 1990 takes some fortitude. Some powerful stuff here for sure (and some pretty hateful stuff) but it's a lot for one sitting. Fave song: AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted

Sounds like not more than most 80s slasher movies then? That’s within the parameters

Not that he takes questions from non-sycophants but I’d love to hear him say which parts specifically are terrible

There are certainly some slow burns on here but plenty of ragers too. And I actually think some of the slow burns with big finishes helped them learn to appreciate slow burns. Like, the end of Night of the Living Dead elicited a full-scale gasp that was earned by everything that built up to it

She is a master of this sort of hinged figure, an old country technique she adapted into a more subtle form for her brand of pop. "We could call it even / Even though I'm leavin'" “I'm right where you left me/you left me no choice but to stay here forever"

#RS500 188 A favorite of mine for a good 5-year stretch. Not many people did so many things so well as Bolan. Guitar, voice, melodies and for my money some of the most fun and genuinely odd lyrics of the psychedelic era. Not to mention basically inventing glam rock. Fave songs: Jeepster; Girl

#RS500 189 A fitting swan song for the riot grrrl era. One funny thing I've noticed is that almost invariably when there's a song with an title that suggests it's ironically trying to mimic a pop hit (e.g. Dance Song '97) I'm like, Sorry but you made an unironically great song. Fave song: Dig Me Out

And I’ll add for the millionth time that one of the reasons the times said it didn’t need a public editor anymore was because it was now responsive to readers on social media — and then immediately began categorically dismissing any criticism on social media

One weird thing is that 1921 throws off the whole timeline. If the story takes place after WW2 everything works, but after WW1 there’s no way Tommy is less than 35 at the time of Pinball Wizard and much more likely 40 or older

#RS500 190 The thing is they were in their early/mid 20s. Whenever I’m tempted to nitpick Tommy’s many flaws I remember what an insane ambition and very worthy accomplishment it was given that. And its pretensions never overwhelm the rock n roll core (largely due to Moon). Fave song: Pinball Wizard

#RS500 191 I love how this album truly goes for broke. The jazz standards are some of the best interpretations I've ever heard and the blues tracks are equally powerful. Only the stabs at trendy early 60s proto-rock/R&B fall a little short. Fave songs: Stormy Weather; I Just Want to Make Love to You

I actually think there’s a case to be made that “the girlies I like are underage” is meant to be taken as a dig at Jimmy Page more than an actual boast

#RS500 192 One of the biggest albums of my high school days, not just bc it made my Stuy Phys Ed shirt instantly cool. Haven't listened in years under the impression it didn't age well but cartoonish misogyny aside it kinda has. The swagger and chaos of classic Looney Tunes. Fave song: The New Style

#RS500 193 A good reminder that CCR is much more than their greatest hits, as great as those are. Willy touches everything from folk jams to Buddy Holly riffs to apocalyptic psychedelia. I didn't know Don't Look Now, which cleverly turns Fortunate Son on its head. Fave songs: Fortunate Son; Effigy

#RS500 194 I'd never say anyone should refuse to listen to music they like bc the artist is, well, Bad. Life's too short for such posturing. But there are times when as a purely emotional response you can no longer stomach it. This is great music. If you can still enjoy it I envy you. I skipped it.

*I think there's a case to be made that if you strip the lyrics from the songs and just read them on paper, Cohen is the best poet of the three, but I also think that's a fundamentally misguided way to understand lyrics, which may be why I don't like him quite as much as a songwriter

#RS500 195 Inarguably one of the Big 3 literary lyricists* but though he has many songs I love (some on this album) I generally find him too austere and cerebral (especially on this album) to listen to as much as Bob & Joni. His guitar work here ominous! Fave song: Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye

Classic NYC memory: when Robyn was touring off this album I ran into the crowd waiting for the subway after the Webster Hall show and about a 100 people on both platforms were singing Dancing On My Own at the top of their lungs

#RS500 196 Tracks 1-8 is one of the greatest pop music runs of the 2010s. I have to think if the arrangements had been more radio- rather than club-friendly this would've been the massive hit it should have been. It's like Britney, Taylor, Pink & Gaga rolled into one. Fave song: Call Your Girlfriend

#RS500 197 Paul McCartney once told me he and John started writing songs because all the local bands had the same repertoire of covers and once they got big enough to headline the opening acts would have played all their material. I guess it worked out for them. Fave song: I Want To Hold Your Hand

#RS500 198 An indisputable classic and important for its time but honestly not my go-to B-52s. It’s pretty basic and very repetitive, down to multiple reused hooks. I’ll still listen to individual songs but not the whole album in one sitting. Fave song: Planet Claire
