"Put the thing where your brain wants you to do the thing" is such a fucking basic rule, why is it so hard

I think it's hard because it's such a radical act of self-love, and particularly for neurodivergent people (doubly so for AFAB ones) we've had a lot of the self-love bullied out of us by parents, teachers, and peers. Add more if you have poverty trauma and must get over the story it's "wasteful."

One of the best pieces of ADHD organising advice I've ever heard is to prioritize making things easy to put away over making them easy to find and grab.

Over in Safety Land, it's "Always make it easy to do the right thing," and a lot of the time that means looking at how people *want* to do the thing and going OK, can we make that safe? Same principle.

For me cuz my parents and teachers screamed at me when I tried to do that. Took me YEARS to just buy three bottles of Tylenol and seven device cords and two sets of everything I use all the time and put them where I need them.

Adam Savage's book "Every Tool a Hammer" explicitly gives you permission to get a second x-acto knife and a second pair of pliers and leave a set at each spot you need them rather than wander around looking for where you last left The Tool and omg it is LIBERATING.

my superpower is being able to lose anything within five seconds of holding it. I now have a new rule: if I can't find Thing and looking is starting to stress me out, I buy a replacement Thing. this is how I avoid hysterical sobbing over "Why do I lose everything" which I've done too often.
