In India, I have relatives whose experience with the RSS was as a volunteer, community-based, pubic-works group who materially helped the poor and fought against British rule. They won hearts and minds. They're also virulent Hindutva supremacists.

Which leader hasn't? That can be a circular, self-serving argument that either side can use. It makes it harder to appeal the premise that fascism is bad, actually, when people see tangible benefits under a fascist's government. It'd be easier to reject fascism if nobody benefited at all.

Last week John Oliver did a segment on Narendra Modi, India's newly re-elected PM, who did make much-needed, ground-level improvements like clean water infrastructure and food distribution. All while doing some really awful fascist shit too. Not sure if it helps to oversimplify the narrative.
