I mean, personal carbon footprint was a thing cooked up by industry to try and worm out of actual industrial scale pollution (which is much more pressing than personal vehicle use). EVs ARE overall much lower in carbon footprint than ICE cars, but Teslas aren't the only game in town any longer.

There's plenty of alternative EVs now, so that logic doesn't even really hold

Star Trek Insurrection is the best TNG movie, easily. Generations is tonally all over the map and just not great. First Contact is *fun* but not very *Trek*. And Nemesis just straight up sucks. Insurrection is like a big budget TNG two-parter. Most in line with the spirit of the show.

Nah we should keep infighting and playing No True Scotsman and making sure everyone knows how much we disagree with ourselves very loudly

Honestly the thing they were most excited about while I was in Hamburg (technically Wedel) was asparagus season. It was white, unseasoned, boiled asparagus and it was...fine. But they were so pumped about it.

I was told that by someone I was working with in Hamburg. When I asked him for an example of Northern German culture, he thought about it for a moment, and then shrugged.

I think it's weird that the movie studio that seems to be doing the most to save the movie experience is also the studio that insists on continuing to release crappy Spider-Man-Adjacent movies no one really wants

Some people are saying there's a lot of thumb biting going on. I asked him sir, do you bite your thumb at me, and he said no sir. Because that would be a bad thing? These thumbs...I hear a lot about how I have small hands, but look at these hands. Big thumbs, huge. Can you imagine if I bit that?

Sure but it's a chicken and egg situation isn't it? Why are sports and drinking so heavily interlinked? I'd love to see some sociology studies on it. You're right on both counts BUT 1) alcoholism is likely underrepresented 2) catering to sports-obsessed "whales" keeps the lights on.

If you want an honest answer, it's because gambling and alcoholism are similar if not pathologically linked. And sports coverage almost exclusively caters to gamblers.

We just watched the Gen X episodes on rerun in syndication. But honestly I'm really stretching to think of kids and family sitcoms where that ever featured heavily. Most blended family shows started with the other parent already gone (Nanny, Who's the Boss, Step by Step, Full House, etc)

Don't know which episode you're referring to specifically but generally there are a lot of colonies that aren't "official". During TNG, Bajor was still annexed into Cardsssian territory and official Federation borders weren't that close. Refugee camps you see on screen aren't Federation.

Can't have more than two parties without getting rid of FPTP voting. FPTP voting naturally coalesces around two parties. Even if a third party rises, it will eventually absorb the weaker party more aligned with it.

Poverty is canonically eliminated in the Federation. Any time you see a planet that's struggling they're either colonists who want to do things the hard way or they're not Federation.

I'm not an expert but people want to live in places with services and work. If they can't attract industry, and they can't build services for tourism or wfh infrastructure...why does the town need to continue to exist?

The conceit of this article is that deep red small towns are important to the US, according to small towns. There's a reason people don't want to live there, and agriculture will survive without them (how does Europe do it, after all?). It's hard to shed a tear for communities that refuse to evolve

Is instax actual film? I assumed it was some kind of thermal print or something. Not necessarily the same chemical reaction as taking 35mm or other negative chemical film meant for direct light exposure, right?

I know slippery slope arguments can be a fallacy, but it does make me uncomfortable to cede any kind of law enforcement to automation, because it opens the door to all other kinds being automated in a 1984 kind of way. Same vibes as "censor the Internet to protect children".

Which makes very little sense when the first run is direct to streaming and the Director's Cut is both planned and debuting on the same streaming platform. It's just a very cynical appeal to Synder fanbros to eek out another couple of months of Netflix subscription.

You know I used to think my biggest problem with that show was that Alex Garland didn't talk to anyone involved in tech, but now I'm thinking he talked to executive techbros who actually do believe that what's shown in the show will be possible some day.
