“Once upon a time, my child, they put everyone’s name and telephone number in a big book… and they just gave it to everyone. You could simply call a stranger and they would pick up the phone.”
“They’d answer it? Come on, grandpa, at least make it somewhat plausible.”
It is weird to me that people are so squeamish about their phone numbers but then will have essentially an open listening device in their homes and send their DNA off to venture capitalists.
Sometimes they'd have school assemblies where somebody would rip the book in half as a lesson to stay off drugs or not have premarital sex or something
These days, 99% of my calls to the house phone are spam (I have a house line, 'cause I don't like to carry my cell around the house, and also I run a business from here). But MOST of them hang up before I even get close enough to a phone to look at the incoming number. Even scammers hate the phone.
