Usually if it's too wet to walk, I go work out at the community center. Unfortunately, today there were literally people kayaking down the street in front of the center. www.fox47news.com/neighborhood...

The remnants of Beryl hit Michigan last night. My office window blew open and knocked everything around. My plants are hurricane casualties, alas.

It's summer, so 14yo created a complicated probability problem for himself and is coding a model to get the right answer. In case anyone wondered if he was truly my kid. LOL.

This flaking red-coloured #CavePainting of three people around a big pig discovered in #Indonesia might be the oldest #narrative artwork humans created, about 51,000 years ago as a new study suggests:

I can see that. I only took two AP tests (I didnāt know it was possible to take them without the class, and I didnāt realize until I got to college what the advantage would have been) but if the U says they will take the credit then they should get you closer to graduation!

For me it makes a difference if itās a topic, like math or physics, where everyone agrees on the skills and knowledge required from an entry-level student, vs a complex skill like writing that improves with use regardless of the specific level of the class.

18yo just got her AP scores. Iām glad a 5 lets her skip calculus I but not actually thrilled about her 4 in Lit allowing her to skip College Writing. The development of that set of skills and knowledge is just so different.

My dad's birthday is next week, so I've been thinking about him. Then today we sang one of the hymns from his funeral, so I ended up with tears running down my face and ducking out so nobody would notice. Spent some time with him in the memorial garden. Grief gotta grief, I guess.

I had a conversation like this with my 18yo today. She knows Nirvana and some of their music. Had not, however, heard of Pearl Jam and didn't recognize the songs I played. OTOH, when we went to watch Barbie in the theaters, she recognized the Indigo Girls song.

Honestly, some of the medieval popes stooped to murder to get into the vatican, so we've really got bigger fish to fry.

Ugh! Sometimes I remind my students that Mendel was a priest. And because they're American, they're often surprised that a highly religious person could found modern genetics and evolutionary theory. Which says a lot more about our country than the Catholic church. It's honestly sad.

LOL. Yes.
I taught RCIA once at a pretty progressive church and one of the wanna-be Catholics started saying that all popes should be beatified if they haven't already and totally didn't understand why the priest, nuns, and I started cracking up.

Yeah. I'm a cradle Catholic who recently decided to switch to Presbyterian. I've never had issues with my super-Catholic family (like, curing diseases with cloth soaked in the blood of a martyr Catholics) but man those converts are a frightening cult in some cases.

I had whooping cough while 6 months pregnant and my lungs were squeezed up into the top of my torso. Definitely the sickest Iāve ever been. And for a year afterwards every cold went to my lungs and was 10x worse than normal. 0/10 would not recommend.

šÆ that last part. I have serious concerns about the future of my previous institution but, frankly, even knowing most of the faculty and administrators I donāt think I would get a straight answer. Not that anyone is hiding anything. They donāt really know either.
