TONIGHT! One of us wrote a book about a serial liar with a complicated sex life, and the other one wrote about Boris Johnson.
Join me and Tim Shipman at Waterstones Piccadilly as we talk about war, voting, spies, deception and magic.
It'll be great fun.

If you fancy hearing some Oh God, What Now and other Podmasters regulars bunny their way through the election results overnight, probably slowly getting drunk on booze and schadenfreude, this is where to find us from 10pm.

Why if the Tories won the election? Spent lunchtime recording this deeply traumatic episode of Oh God, What Now?

Watching the Boris event, I started wondering if they're now down to voters who are actual party members.

“We get newspaper articles about the way young men are radicalised online by Andrew Tate, but no one is talking about the way the over-50s are being lured into extreme centrism by Old Etonian podcasters.”

We’re going on a Truss hunt! We’re going to catch a PM! What a beautiful day. We’re not scared!
Oh no! Labour! Keir Starmer’s Labour! We can’t go over them. We can’t go under them. We’ll have to go through them!

It's also funny that the Tory right believe him to be on the left because of the thing he hated doing.

There's something in that, but Sunak didn't especially rise because he had great press so much as because he did the right things internally. And the first time most people noticed him he was handing out free money, which is... popular.

Sunak the guy has been in a safe bubble all his life, with no sense of jeopardy or consequence to making mistakes. Safe education, a safe job where greed and selfishness were rewarded. Safe seat in the commons to nod along with other middle management city types.

I can't imagine he was thinking he'd be leader so quickly. I think it was more "being a Leaver will be important in the party long-term".

Had a chat in the wake of the D-Day thing with a Cabinet minister about the lengths we would have gone to simply to have a chance to stand on Omaha Beach that afternoon. THIS IS WHAT MAKES ALL THE CRAP WORTH IT!

I think "what's going on in the Tory party" is the bit of the puzzle that they were OK at. "Is this thing a long-term good idea for the country?", less so.

Yeah, I'm not sure that was generally obvious in Jan 2016, but I suspect it was obvious to, say, James Forsyth.

Yes, exactly. Does anyone know yet why Sunak resigned in 2022? He's consistently refused to explain.

I agree that the prime minister no longer spends his weekends texting rich people to pay his decorating bills, and that this is *better*, but he emphatically HASN'T broken with Johnson sleaze. When has he clearly condemned it? This may be why folk around him think insider betting is OK.

To be fair, the Lib Dems concealed their intentions in Tunbridge Wells with a campaign HQ on the High Street, a high-profile candidate and full-time staff. Anyone could have missed it.

Obviously, journalists only deserve contempt, but it's interesting about David Miliband that pretty much *every* political journalist has a story they will cheerfully share of his astonishing rudeness, including during that campaign. This is not a man who is good at politics.
