I teach teachers to teach thinking. Part of that includes understanding the draw of conspiracy as a panacea for human beings' inability to cope with counter-narrative ideas. No, you do NOT want fame. Fame allows people to be seen. It also kills people.

I think State of the World is actually a big part of it, coupled with rapid unregulated info spreading online. Since 9/11, people have felt continually falling control over their lives. So, they try to control something. The mask reaction was another example.

Ok, I need a fourth post! You understand that YOU sunk Ep. 9 because you didn't understand Ep. 8, right? Your lack of media literacy KILLED Ep. 9. Disney was a fool for listening to you. You screamed over the ice cream that you dropped on the ground so mommy bought you another just to shut you up.

(3/3) 2) you are not entitled to creative control over something that you've done ZERO of the work to create. Gent bent. Touch grass. It is unpleasant to be around you and few people have any sympathy for your first world "problem."

(2/3) Star Wars doesn't owe you anything, you parasocial freak. It isn't "yours." You don't "deserve" XYZ thing that YOU want. You are entitled to your opinion, but you are not entitled to 1) dominate fan spaces with spiteful rhetoric just because you're having a toddler meltdown, and

(1/3) Today's rant: I will say it with absolute conviction: The bullying of Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran over Star Wars was sociopathic behavior. I used to be pretty open about being a Star Wars fan. I'm not so open anymore. I am AFRAID of many Star Wars fans.

I know. I'm concerned that some brains are still pandemic-broken and can't see the forest for the trees. Ethics are not optional.

I'm battling with a colleague right now who has a good heart but is ignoring the environmental implications in the "usefulness" discussion. We've long held that best practice is "training the right way," but I'm wavering on whether even training is wise. :/

I agree. AI can't. I'm concerned that for every you and me who understand accessibility in this discussion there are people expressing judgmental anti-literacy sentiments. It may be unintentional, but it's still there. There is "you don't read well enough for my tastes" in it. That enrages me.

Update: I now understand this is AI. That is a huge problem. But, I also want us to be conscious of lack of accessibility to reading through gatekeeping as well. People aren't speaking about this in the context of AI. They are acting like altering vocab is inherently bad.

(2/2) ELA instruction has trained students to sometimes hate reading. So, tools to reduce vocabulary in classic works shouldn't be automatically criticized as unhelpful. Smacks of intellectual elitist to me. "You're not in the club if you don't read ORIGINAL works at the level I WANT you to."

(1/2) I have a problem with the backlash to this. I completely agree that there is beauty in language. And also, many people find reading inaccessible, and vocabulary level is one dimension of that. Just like science instruction has trained sometimes trained students to hate science,

The bros crafting AI suffer the same foil of many computer programmers. They seem to view all information as simple, linear, and infinitely reducible to code. All human understanding and thinking is contextual. AI is dumber than a box o' rocks.

It blows my mind that people can understand that war-profiteering is a bad thing and worthy of social reproach, but people engaged in pandemic-profiteering and nobody was bothered.

...your friend.

They are just waiting for you to calm down and forget. A corporation will never put ethics ahead of profits.

I think the reason Philip K Dick is still the predominant SF writer of the last century is, he was the only one who foresaw a future where everything would be boring, inconvenient and dehumanising, and where the only way you can win is to somehow refuse to give up your humanity.

Not computer related, but my parents took away my DND books until I was 18 to protect me from them. Now I teach adolescent development, play ttrpgs as my primary hobby, and make content about ttrpgs as a secondary hobby. So, talk about your all-time backfires...

"Humanity unites to stop the alien threat" seems bonkers in the post-pandemic space. They Live was a much more accurate portrayal. Humans would be selling each other out left and right.

"Exertional heat stroke, the most serious form of EHI, is one of the leading causes of death among high‐school athletes (Barrow & Clark, 1998). Estimates suggest that roughly 9,000 high‐school athletes are affected by EHIs each year (Gauer & Meyers, 2019)." Me think 9,000 and "never" same thing.

There are countless schools in this country where this MESSAGE to parents would get this ass clown canned. Dipshit has no idea how heavily he is protected despite being unprofessional and unethical. Now, this is Texas, so I'm wondering if you even need ed certification to be a head coach?

Many "modern" educators have focused on "how to think" their entire careers, but are stopped by parents, school board members, and legislatures who want anything but that. It is pretty rich that people blame "modern education" when most of our problems are created by actors outside the system.

(2/2) We have to be aware of this in education because this is where a lot of suicidal ideation (I'm not perfect, like I was told I should be!) comes from in that group. Of course, none of that justifies essentially taking out class anxiety on artists. In case you're wondering what generates it...

(1/2) This is also usually where "I CAN'T rate it 5/5. That's "perfect!" comes from. Psychologically, middle classers often understand they can't "make it" through wealth, so they're left with "virtue." This often results in really naive decision-making.

There can be classism here, especially from middle-class white folks. Middle classers are often heavily enculturated to be "honest to a fault." The existence of "aggressive reviewing" isn't by accident. It can come from being trained to conflate "brutal honesty" with integrity. Follow Kendra's ask!

Money and access are both commodities to people like this and they will lie, cheat, and schmooze to get what they want. It's only logical if you can't do it by skill or your target doesn't care if you have skill. Or, if you faithfully conceal truth in service to the commodities. Or, it'll do nothing

I understand. I'm glad you're surprised. I'm at the stage of "people are so rotten, I'm surprised we aren't predicting it" stage. "It's everyone for themselves" out there right now. Also, good people still exist. We are what we do. If we don't do the work, no one will.
