I’ve gotten a few emails lately that remind me of the time a student came up to me after a lecture on the New Madrid seismic zone and smugly told me it’s pronounced “Madrid”, like the city.
And, here’s the thing… it’s fine for you to correct me but you better be right.
I had to Google this but would it not be unusual for anything in Missouri to be pronounced the way one thinks it might be pronounced based on original pronunciation? Smiles in Cairo.
