Chevron is such a great example of why centering emergency management reform just around climate change cannot be effective. Risk creation is messy and the climate movement keeps wanting to simplify it to “climate disasters”. I wish we only had to deal with climate change!

I see people excitedly talking about disaster-related “climate solutions” online and then when I go look at those “solutions” in the communities where they’ve been implemented they don’t seem great at all.

This really must be interpreted as a direct attack by FEMA on higher education. A complete undermining of independent academic thought and work for our field. Training is not education and acting like it is will send our field back decades.

It is difficult to interpret this as anything other than FEMA intentionally torpedoing the discipline of emergency management. Which is particularly interesting in the context of the discipline being one of the only sources of accountability for the agency’s actions.
