Sometimes to protect my lunch from thieving cats if I get called away I hide it in the microwave. Sometimes habit means that whenever I close the microwave door I press start. Anyway a microwaved cheese sandwich is nothing like a cheese toastie just fyi.

Slight twist on this, I have seen researchers suggest legacy websites of resources as grant outputs and get criticised “who will update it?” Which is a bit rich coming from funders who don’t provide follow on funds. I think if clearly labelled and designed as such, a static archive can work ok.

I’ve told so many researchers NOT to set up study or network websites. There’s usually very little thought about what it’s meant to achieve, beyond the idea that it adds some kind of legitimacy. But a dead or poor website risks harming reputation if anything.

One of the mindfucks (technical term) of capitalism is making everything concerned with profit or cost, every venture - even public or charity - have to be justified financially, but still make people feel they should say “obviously money can’t solve everything”

Tilly burned her paw on the hob years ago when she was still a kitten and we must have made a big fuss everytime she held it up of the ground. I say this as she now lifts up that one little paw whilst pointedly maintaining eye contact whenever she wants something.

This really resonates. I keep seeing teams uncomfortable to acknowledge power. “If you refuse to define power structures, informal ones will emerge almost instantly. Not expressing these can be extremely harmful to your organisation. So it is essential to work with power and talk about it.”

It’s just agonising to be repeatedly told you’re unhelpfully contributing to “polarising debate” when the debate is along the lines “should these people exist? Should these people be able to make decisions about their own lives?” The ‘debate’ is the horrific part, not the tone of those contributing.

Came here to say this! Academic snobbery of claiming a Position on the Argument rather than saying “I just don’t want to/can’t/don’t honestly know enough about it.” I think some genuinely feel guilty, but wish they’d direct that energy to supporting colleagues who do strike, not undermining them
