I’ve been trying to teach my kid to look at the source of things and consider explanations for why something that appears ridiculous, rage baity, or overly simplistic is the way it is. It’s been good practice for me too because this election is going to be the death of me.

It’s amazing how people forget what their lives were like at that age. My child is that age now and the relationship dramas among the friend groups are hard to keep up with. You couldn’t pay me to be that age again.

It was really sad. I do think she would have blown through a liver within a year, though. She just couldn’t stop. The whole situation made me realize I didn’t understand addiction at all on a visceral level.

Yeah, totally get it. My cousin died at 32, couldn’t get a new liver because she’d need to not drink for 6 months and just wasn’t able to do it.

Did you listen to the Daily podcast this week on alcohol? It was fascinating because it turned into the two people ostensibly reporting on the topic talking about themselves and justifying daily drinking. I think they believed that everyone drinks nearly every.

In case folks missed it! There’s so much health info you can’t get from genetic testing, and when I helped my cousin piece things together via AncestryDNA she got access to info from her biological parents that was potentially life-saving down the line. Hopefully this helps others.

Also I’ve been deeply irritated that Biden ran again at his age this whole time. I found the debate mortifying. I would also vote for pizza rat, a head of lettuce, or a cardboard box if it staved off Txmp 2.0. I remember the Bush years. I don’t want that on steroids.

I have been thinking about that time Jon Stewart went on Crossfire and laid into them about how bad political entertainment shows that celebrated faux contentious battle were for the country. It just lives in my head, more these days.

Just based on the time frame, almost certainly. Some settlers from the US, but lots of immigrants. MNHS has everything. I love going there and looking at old records.

This is tangential, but over at Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul there is an area of civil war veterans. It’s neat. Pretty small though. Also a giant firefighter statue on the SE side of the cemetery. This thread is also very informative/interesting.

I wonder how many of those guys were immigrants, I’d guess a fair number. I think about that angle a lot, who were the Minnesotans that fought in that battle—a whole slew of my Irish immigrant family wound up in various MN companies, one (that I know of) in the 1st at Gettysburg.

Thanks for this thread! I somewhat recently learned that a family member was part of the 1st Minnesota, and got badly wounded on the 3rd (in that battle I presume).

I was talking to my dad about some work drama and he told me the story of when Pawlenty came into office and he lost over a million dollars in a single day for the program he ran (health-related stuff for kids with disabilities). I’ve been that and how relevant that tenuousness is in so many areas.
