Hüsker Dü’s “Zen Arcade” was released 40 years ago. It was a massive accomplishment. Occasionally a record is released that's completely unlike anything that came before it. This is one of those records. Iconic in so many ways. The cover photo, creatively refined by Grant Hart. (1/8)

I love everything about this photo of Joey Ramone c. 1985, from the correctly punctuated hand-lettered sign with equalized pricing for the three genders, to the photo of Aretha Franklin on the cover of Long Island Pulse Magazine and Grace Jones in the ad on the back.

Apparently the government of the Yucatán recently erected a Poseidon statue on one of their major beaches. It’s a very heavily Mayan area, where people still pray to Chaac, the god of rainfall. They’re now being slammed with 3 hurricanes and significant flooding, leading to memes like this

It’s important to understand that overruling Chevron and granting the president immunity—while apparently in tension—are of a piece. Together, they destroy the administrative structures that channel power and shift all discretion upwards to president. I explain here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

to clarify: life under authoritarians is often boring and normal for many people until it all of a sudden isn’t, and of course it’s that uncertainty that causes the corrosion.

I think the reason Philip K Dick is still the predominant SF writer of the last century is, he was the only one who foresaw a future where everything would be boring, inconvenient and dehumanising, and where the only way you can win is to somehow refuse to give up your humanity.

I've found that summon opportunity ebbs and flows. Definitely way more chances to summon in the base game back in 2022 (naturally). I also waited forever for the Rahdahn fight, even back then. For spirit ashes I often bring in the Mimic Tear which can feel broken-level OP in such a satisfying way

Surprising, as pretty much every time I summon in the Elden Ring DLC I get at least 6 summon signs. Maybe it's a level match issue? My character is 168, though I started the DLC at around 135 or so and got similar summon sign piles. In DS, things were much more brutal, like you experienced

On the continuum. I am mostly there for the exploration, but I enjoy storming dungeons and fighting bosses with gracious summons who almost always wreck shop while little old (relatively unskilled) me sends in the occasional Moonlight Greatsword blast (usually from out of range).

Remember, a large portion of silent films are lost, not due to decay or fires, but because they were intentionally junked by their studios. Among the worst was Paramount, aka CBS/Paramount. People come and go. Corporate culture is forever.

ChatGPT already has “Ph.D.-level intelligence,” in that once you remove it from its extremely narrow field of expertise (assembling words into credible-sounding passages) it is wildly out of its depth, but people vastly overestimate its authority because they don’t understand what “intelligence” is.
