A thing that's always surprising to me is how many techbros think they can nuance their way through Nazis. Pro trip: You can't nuance your way through Nazis. There's no nuance in Nazis. What's more, you're (probably) not the fucking US government. You don't *have* to nuance the Nazis. So just don't.
Techbros think they can nuance their way through ANYTHING. The sad result of a lifetime of thinking they're the smartest in the room (and often being treated as if they were).
It's wild that businesses take stances where the only downside is maybe losing business from the worst possible people while definitely losing business from the rest of society
Watching some current nonsense going down in the chess world, it's become apparent to me that a lot of people just want an algorithm to make their decisions for them. "If X and Y, then banned, if not, then you have to allow it," as opposed to human judgment and discretion.
"We're in the business of killilng Nazis, and cousin, business is a-boomin."
Answer: intense public shame. Anytime a nazi shows up, be nice, but call them a nazi. Repeatedly. And increasingly louder with each repetition. Until they go away. Cause Nazis are fucking evil.
Proud to say I literally have zero to do with substack because I'm already failing (not really trying hard) to keep up with Bluesky, Threads, Insta, Quora, Reddit, Facebook and TikTok. Meanwhile Pinterest keeps pushing notifications I just swipe away 😅
It's not a question of allowing them to speak - you don't have the power to silence them. The question is whether you choose to host them and broadcast their messages to others. Choosing to host Nazis implies that their messages are OK and their behavior to others is insufficient to evict them.
So is Substack a Nazi bar now? "you have to nip it in the bud immediately. These guys come in and it's always a nice, polite one. Then THEY bring friends and the friends bring friends and they stop being cool and then you realize, oh shit, this is a Nazi bar now." www.reddit.com/r/TalesFromY...
I don't believe they think they can "nuance their way through Nazis"; I genuinely think they just don't care and prioritize profit over people at every turn.
Hamish doesn't give a fuck about freedom of discourse. He just sees dollar signs in the outrage.
It surprises me very little at this point. These techbro types are so incredibly arrogant about libtertarianism saving the world. Because if something sounds right after 5 seconds with zero introspection, reasoning, or nuance, it must be perfect!
I had been wondering if they had responded to this yet.
Their response 100% reaffirms the decision I've made multiple times to not publish a newsletter on their platform (for this very reason).
The comments on that post convinced me to leave. A *lot* of writers are very happy that the nazis are staying! They are not being coy! This is Substack telling us who they are, writers included, and I believe them.
There's really only about two steps between "allowing Nazis" and "only hosting Nazis" but that seems to be one step too many for these guys to think ahead.
"The only way to make Nazis go away is to give them a platform. Taking away their platform just makes them MORE Nazi."
I'm bewildered every time I hear this assertion and this is not the first time I've been bewildered.
The issue is that the backlash is going to further their delusion that they are acting as ‘the last bastions of free speech’, they’re going to end up thinking their public death is noble
I wonder if substack would be willing to go "full disclosure" and put a swastika on their home page? You know, just to let the Nazis know they have a safe place.
You know, I was just wondering if I should focus on my substack or my wordpress blog (not that I get any $$ out of them) but I'd rather not drive traffic to a site that is like "eh, it's fine though" when it comes to horrible humans spreading the word of horribleness.
