A teenager in my family is reading Countess. Comments so far: Drama started happening right away. Like I didn't have to wait. Why did the police do that to Grandma? Like when I read this, it sounds like GRANDMA. Why did they do that to Grandma? It's very Trinidad. I mash up grandma guys. 😈

Right and sometimes a text is in convo with something deeply personal to the author because in reality most authors write for themselves first. The reader is later in the process so it's always interesting to me that one would expect to even get all the references. We don't all know each other!

When I am pushed now on my word choices I often, not always just say: It's poetry I'm keeping it. You will have to fight poetry then. Good luck!

YES! The other issue is that lets say you've never heard that phrase before okay...embrace it! what could it mean? this is where poetry collides with prose fiction. This is the beauty of shades of meaning here.

A man complained about the first sentence in my story Laughter Among the Trees: "The highway to the campground cuts through the granite Laurentian Plateau like a desiccated wound." Can a wound be desiccated he asked rhetorically. Why are all these words necessary. Me: Yes and because I said so.
