i live in an america that is diverse, and tolerant, and prosperous, and safe. people of all races and colors and religions living together and it's just... fine.
and somewhere out there there's the other america. christian and white and homogenous and insane.

There is some validity to inhabiting unsafe places and working on building bridges and having dialogs. But also organizing and coordinating opposition to the hatred and rolling back of basic human rights. Purpling the red lands has more impact than being a safe blue dot in a safe blue space.
I’ve lived in both Americas. Obviously, living in the tolerant and safe one is preferable. But it gets really easy to play pretend and ignore the parts of your state and other states that lack the safety. And the folks there not privileged to flee for safer spaces.
Living in Texas is like living in the City and The City, by China Mieville. Both live side by side and have strict unwritten rules about how we just don’t look the other in the eye.
