For most of its history, America hasn’t been a democracy, by any meaningful definition of the term! This isn’t some It Can’t Happen Here shit, in a way, it’s already happened. It just may not have directly affected you.

…the dramatic sweep or bang of a March on Rome, it’s gonna feel a lot more “normal” than that and therefore easier to dismiss by many elite pundits 2) ask an older Black voter if it’s hard to believe that America may no longer be a democracy at some point in its modern history.

The analogy that comes to mind is if the media stopped reporting on the weather because everyone knows it’s hot outside.

I suppose no surprise in a fascist movement, but wild that *this guy* is their heroic ubermensch, and the crisis worthy of destroying 250 years of democracy is ... uh, some historically meager immigration and trans people drinking a beer?

Again, Black people are an exception here, as basically anyone who stayed in the Jim Crow South has a living memory of living under what amounted to fascism, including the “always walking on eggshells/lack of social trust/long periods of boring endurance/randomized terrifying violence”

I don't know who needs to hear this, but Godzilla vs. Biollante is on the Criterion Channel this month. This has long been the most difficult to see of all Godzilla movies. They're also showing The Return of Godzilla, the Japanese edit of Godzilla 1985, which is almost as rare.

Canada Day is a good day to appreciate the virtues of constitutional monarchy as a system that sharply divides the roles "sovereign who is above the law" and "partisan governing executive facing reelection who is in in charge of the armed forces, the intelligence & prosecutorial agencies, etc."

I would feel better if those who are supposed to be political experts didn't beclown themselves this way. The choice is: 1) Biden 2) Harris 3) Total chaos / royal rumble, serious risk of coalition crack up. Leading an anti-fascist coalition is very hard. There is no Aaron Sorkin solution here.

it feels like the whiteness of big political media spaces right now is having a big effect on how people are thinking about the debate. eg I have seen relatively little discussion of trump's "black jobs" comment, which immediately exploded on black twitter

One of the things I can’t get my head around watching the Biden/Trump debate prep from afar is everyone in the media treating it as normal. Just another Presidential debate. The first debate between a sitting president and a felon and insurrectionist is not normal. It should be watched with horror.

From a non-tech person’s point of view, the AI discourse went very quickly from “there’s a 78% chance this will end civilization” to “we’re installing this in all dishwashers, stepladders, social sciences research, and novellas and you will be so so grateful”

Essay by Jonah Siegel makes an interesting point: if you hold that critiquing the canon is a mode of resistance to the powers that be, you must grapple with the fact that *our* elites no longer go to art museums, see plays, attend film festivals, or read books. Moreover, they hate the people who do.
