We can even cut it up into three thoughts 1. Hooo boy we're the richest society in the history of the world, it is very very nice 2. There are massive, *massive* problems with how we use/distribute those resources 3. Also we could yet be much richer still

I'm sympathetic to this, but housing is objectively brutal. If I had to re-buy my current house in my current market at current rates with my current equity, I couldn't afford it. Imagine how it is for first-time buyers.

like i won't argue that there's some serious malaise in this country i just think it's very hard to look at the data and conclude it's a response to objective material conditions

The malaise, I think, comes from how the gap between how good things are and how good they COULD be if (insert boogeyman here) was just PUSHED OUT OF THE WAY has never felt wider.
