Just ask: could it be sepsis? I was β€œlucky” w/my sepsis experience: 3xIV antibiotics,8 days in hospital,6 weeks off work, 6 months until I felt β€œnormal”. But no ICU, no permanent injury: because I called 999 & was treated under the sepsis protocol. Learn the symptoms: sepsistrust.org/about/about-...

Also a final where one of the anthems mentions allegiance to the King of Spain, but not the one you'd expect.

If the final matchup is between Spain and The Netherlands it will be especially pitched as historically the winner gets Belgium

Made perfect sense in the 1920s, I'm sure! But it's bizarre that we have voter ID requirements and not candidate ID requirements when the vast majority of electoral fraud is committed by candidates!

The whole process is designed for a pre-ID pre-internet society, where getting 10 people to confirm they know you and would vote for you, and having things sent to/from your house, was actually quite a high bar in terms of confirming eligibility compared with, say, opening a bank account.

I'm more inclined to believe that some of the paper candidates didn't want people to know they were running, but it's still electoral fraud to use a common name you're not actually commonly known by, pretty much to stop that from happening.

I have now fallen down a rabbit hole on the electoral commission's website reading about electoral fraud cases, like the time Labour gave out packets of dates. Truly, we are not a serious country.

I don't think id is required (which is especially dodgy now it is for voting), just getting it signed by 10 electors from the constituency. I do wonder what cross checking is done across nominations to make sure no one runs in multiple places (under multiple common names...).

The name does have to actually be commonly used for you, though, so you can't just call yourself Bob Mark unless that name is already associated with you. If not, electoral fraud!

I've been thinking on this, and obviously they fielded a huge number of paper candidates, but also you don't have to run under your own name (hence Count Binface), so it's possible the ghosts used "commonly used names".

The thing about Facebook these days is when you get birthday wishes it's about 50% friends, and 50% your cousin's step sister you met once at a wedding, colleagues you haven't worked with in a decade, and your college room mate's husband.

Words from Nahuatl with <x>β€”like "Mexico" and "axolotl"β€”have completely different pronunciations in Nahuatl, Spanish, and English. And the same for Basque words with <x>, like "Xavier". This is due to the historic instability of Spanish "x". Story time!

This feels like one of those things where there's some "consumption of British twill" bill or wood turners strike that led to trousers for chairs which got retconned into a Victorian moral panic because no one could admit it was about anything as gauche as workers rights.

Impressionism and social realism wouldn't have emerged the way they did without the technological inovation that was tubed paint. It facilitated outdoors painting, natural and urban observation, and therefore a new focus on everyday subjects compared to classical painting bound by the workshop.

And the reason the UK adopted coal so early is because we decimated our forests to build war ships in the early days of colonisation. And having adopted coal so early helped lead to the industrial revolution (much better for furnaces and engines than wood) which enabled the full on British empire.

Chicken farming too. Until the second half of the C20th chicken was rarely eaten except by people who raised them for eggs, which was essentially the pin money job on farms. (Stuff You Missed in History Class had a great episode, called The Chicken of Tomorrow)
