I've been listening to the Pod Mortem podcast and they recently did a bunch of ur-horror movies like Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, and the Mummy. These are great movies with amazing effects for the time and they set the standard for these characters in later films.

David is awesome. At communicating renewable energy information in great detail and clarity. On politics he's a conventional blue-no-matter-who Democrat and in this case he's very wrong. All the lights are flashing red for Biden's chances in November & the idea that he can't be replaced is baseless.

Going with a sundowning candidate whose running mate is also very unpopular could not be more risky than almost anything else they do. Just like the messy process of passing legislation in congress 90% of voters won't pay attention to the convention. Just the candidate once September rolls around.

As diabolical as the court's immunity ruling is, it more or less just makes explicit what's always been true. The President can't be held accountable for crime, because it's a requirement of the job to commit war crimes. You can't have a President afraid of going to jail & run an empire.

There would have been a clear rubric under which the Dems could've carved out a filibuster exception to pack the court: If a majority on the court is created by justices selected by presidents who did not get the popular vote, justices should be added by a popular president in equal number.

The Dems might be screwed by that stuff that always matters: how people feel about the economy. Letting the Fed raise interest rates to counter what was really monopoly pricing and supply chain issues hurt people in the pocket book. That's likely to stick to any candidate.

It's about the unfavorables. A lesser-known candidate has room to improve their favorability, but a well-known one does not. It was the problem Hillary faced in 2016 and both Biden and Harris have now. A lesser-known Dem polling the same vs. Trump now has a better ability to grow their support.

I don't know who the replacement would be, but the person at the top of the ticket names their running mate. Harris doesn't have to be asked to step aside. My guess would be a governor who isn't a white male, who's from a swing state. Perhaps Whitmer.

Another option: they replace Harris on the ticket with someone that is popular, unlike either Biden or Harris. The new running mate becomes the clear president-in-waiting if elected which makes them the actual candidate. Even less friction since replacing the running mate is easier.

It's hard for people now to grasp what kind of difference Voodoo graphics made for us. Getting 3d graphics to run at high detail and smooth framerate was simply impossible otherwise -- even with the low-poly models and 8-bit textures. It was worth adding a whole 'nother card to your rig.

learning to cook things was literally a critical step in our evolution, allowing for larger brains and time to do stuff like make tools and art and language. you can't live on raw food. the only thing it does is make you sick and lose weight. if you're into that sort of thing.

This is the centrist dilemma. The GOP has gotten so extreme that to maintain the status quo, Dems have to violate norms. It's the norms or the status quo. One of them has to go. Biden is wedded to norms and institutions. The wrong man for the job & that was obvious in 2020.

I recently read that there is a very strong correlation between homelessness and rents increasing above 30% of the median wage. Which is what you see in cities that are attracting lots of new people for jobs, but not building lots of new housing. It's landlord profiteering driving homelessness.
