In a #GeneralElection where the environment and climate have barely been given a thought, as well as voting for change tmrw, birders can also commit to change and adopt #lowcarbonbirding. For the planet’s sake.

If those running these companies aren’t personally invested in #lowcarbonbirding can we expect them to stop taking the high-carbon £? To stop promoting high-carbon travel and birding? But the conservation orgs are no better. RSPB and others rely on the high-carbon £ too 🤷🏻♂️ 3/3

I think the answer is simple. As organisations they’re conflicted because they rely on advertising and sponsorship revenue from high-carbon companies. Despite paying lip service to #lowcarbonbirding they actively promote and individually engage in high-carbon birding. 2/3

I’ve been thinking about the role birding media play on issues like this. If they can’t get it right then why do we expect the general media to get it right? And why don’t they get it right? As individuals they’ve been around long enough to know the facts or where to get them 1/3

Still catching up with #Glastonbury2024 and just fantastic to see #Glasto celebrate #Odonata with their new mega dragonfly installation and also the national news coverage of it.
Dragonflies are cool! 😎 😉😂

An interesting read on @ibisjournal.bsky.social’s blog especially for Northern Isles birders as first xbills are arriving up here.
Why irruptions of Common Crossbills and Parrot Crossbills co-occur – the role of key and non-key conifers.

Most conservationists / birders don’t care enough about the planet to change - that much is evident. The examples set by conservation orgs & birding media have been truly pathetic.
We left it too late but at least some of us tried. I have the utmost respect for those people. ✊

Only two weeks until the annual ultra-high carbon travel festival of backslapping called Birdfair.
Another year on, climate is much worse yet it’s still supported by RSPB, Birdlife, British Birds & Birdguides etc.
Profit before planet. Every time.

No amount of Swift bricks will address the underlying cause of Swift decline but they /may/ compensate for lost nest site. Every time the bricks are mentioned, surely climate should be mentioned too? #lowcarbonbirding

Lots of people want change to restore nature and save the planet.
Way too few people want to change their own lifestyles though.
Natural systems are now breaking down. I suspect the speed of breakdown will only increase.

The article on the left has one brief mention of climate change. Comments on the BG site are split btw climate deniers & those accepting scientific facts.
Hard to believe we are STILL in this position. Profit before planet.
People need to speak up. We are way too accepting.

Just back from our cycling trip across France: ferry Santander, trains to Bayonne, cycled 700+ miles Velodyssee/EV1 to Roscoff. Camped mostly with a few nights under a roof for a change and some sightseeing. Slowly going through photos so here's a selection from first few days.

Here in Orkney maybe up to 80% of Bonxies lost. Gannet we know has fast developed immunity and the drop in AONs on Westray between 2019 and 2023 was only 2! Despite dead Gannets found regularly. BF has simply halted the annual increase in Gannets for time being. Too early to tell for auks, etc.
