Or, there are people in his inner circle who know he’s not up to it, who wanted to show the world as early as possible. Which is an interpretation I heard often in the days after.

no, i don't think that's it. i think we have an increasingly senile man who is the only thing standing between us and fascism.

Look, I'm not, like, pro-Kamala. I think I prefer Biden to her, and see her as the likely beneficiary of him passing the torch. But, we're dealing with a crisis here, and there is no other choice.

"Clyburn earlier on CNN said Biden needs to conduct “town-hall” style events to prove his mental acuity and assuage fears over his candidacy. " "One House aide said members feel betrayed by Biden and his staff because of how the president handled the aftermath of the debate."

I am trying to explain why the majority of Democrats in the House of Representatives have reached the conclusions they have--and why it's not likely to change.

Folks, I understand: Trump is absolutely a fascist. It's incredibly important that the Democrats win. I also think (with the huge exception of Israel), Joe Biden has been a very good president. But, he's clearly not up to the task of winning this election. I want us to win. He can't do it.

Nancy Pelosi said Biden must show what he's like unscripted to the American people by doing interviews. "Not one, maybe two — a couple of those. I think that is essential," Pelosi said. "I think it is essential for them to do that." I've also been questioning his ability to speak unscripted.

I can perfectly understand why it would feel comforting to lie to ones self about this, but I'm hoping the people who are actually in positions to do something about it won't.

Genuinely, did he take questions at the events on the night of the debate? I am sorry that I don't think shaking people's hands at a Waffle House is a sufficient example of what Pelosi is calling for.

I appreciate this view, and it has some truth, but I think it’s pretty backwards. Voters across the board have consistently said they think Biden is too old. Elite Dems and media types have said it’s not a problem. They’re finally catching up with popular wisdom.

80% of American voters don't believe Joe Biden is capable of doing the job. What are we even debating here man?

He's asking us to give him another 4 years. I think he's done a great job. I don't trust he will be capable in another 4.

What is there to weigh? The fact it's being "weighed" is evidence of my point. This is only a question if you're concerned you candidate can't perform.

He hasn’t done anything with questions or a live back and forth since the debate, and didn’t schedule one until Friday. Not doing at least one weekend interview was absolute malpractice

I do not believe that Joe Biden has the cognitive or mental abilities to serve as president for another 4 years. Absolutely not.

that is expressly not the point. at none of those events has he fielded questions. that's the point. yes, he's doing the interview on friday. if he does several of those, he can quell the concerns. but, the fact he hasn't has convinced lots of high level democrats he can't.

The Biden team seems to trust him to speak with a teleprompter. They don't seem to trust him to speak without one. I'd bet they're right: he can't be trusted to speak coherently in public without a teleprompter. I don't think you can come from behind in a presidential campaign with that handicap.

The campaign isn't fucking up. There is literally no way to hide a presidential nominee who can't be trusted to speak extemporaneously in public. It's untenable.

It took Biden's team nearly a week to reach out to Congressional Democrats. That's something you only do if you genuinely don't trust your guy. Biden's team is trying to hide him--which is adding to the freakout from high level Dems. His team is acting like he can't convince people.

Nancy Pelosi said Biden needed to do a series of interviews to prove he's capable of the job. I agree with her. Biden has a sit-down with Stephanopoulos scheduled--more than a week after the debate. He didn't take questions from big donors. He spoke to Jeffries a week later. It's really not good.

No, I'm saying Biden's team clearly does not trust him to take questions in unscripted settings--particularly those which are televised. He's obviously sharp and capable some of the time.

My wife is black, and so are two of my close, long-time colleagues I've been working on this stuff with. Polling came out today from the NYT saying 47% of black Democrats want to replace Biden. Have a nice day!

Has he answered questions at any public or private events since the debate? My understanding is that he has not. The campaign trusts him to read off a teleprompter and not much else. He didn’t even do calls to elected officials!

Hey this is a scary time and I understand it’s hard to accept that the person we’re all dependent on to win almost certainly can’t do that. I am also scared. I don’t think it’s helpful for us to lie about the situation we are in, but to identify the best alternatives and proceed accordingly.

Exactly this. The Biden campaign can’t respond to people’s concerns (donors, Democrats in Congress, the media, the voters) because they don’t trust Biden to answer questions. That’s a completely untenable status quo — especially when you’re losing.

Here’s why Biden is toast: in this situation, any candidate in Biden’s shoes would do a series of events (interviews, press conferences, town halls, etc) to prove they are up to the task. But, Biden isn’t doing that because he can’t. He’s not capable—and that’s not going to change.
