Former Republican who had to disavow the GOP when it moved too far right, abandoned its principles, and started getting excessively stupid. Actually, come to think of it, I came here from Twitter for pretty much the same reasons.
Ah! My home state has been mentioned! Tradition demands that I now post my favorite animated MD flag gif, but I am afraid I can't do that yet. I'll have to settle for one from the archive.

I feel like it might be stolen internet valor unless you've been in at least one of the two Browser Wars. Although I suppose at this point, a tour of duty on Musk's Twitter/X and surviving it to make it here would also count as being given a Purple Internet Heart, so I suppose that also works.

Nope, perhaps even better/worse: a disingenuous article intended to discourage people to not vote this November, called "Why I don't Vote" and written by Matthew Walther, who—thanks to some internet sleuths—we found out very much DID vote.

The entire set of pro-arguments that people are presenting basically keeps boiling down to "It's fine because the system won't be abused."
I mean, PEOPLE ABUSING THE SYSTEM is literally why we're here right now. We have over TEN YEARS now of watching a person abuse it at every step.

The problem with that is exactly why we've been having so many problems for decades now—it's really difficult (by design) to make those sorts of sweeping changes, and without the Democrats holding a supermajority, it's virtually impossible to get almost any of the really impactful changes made.

I was happy to vote for Biden, because he was not Trump. But the ONE thing I really, really, REALLY was hoping he'd be able to do during his term—beyond anything else—was to convert all these "that's just the way it's always been done" and "expected protocols" in government into ACTUAL LAWS.

Pretty sure "terrible but expected" is exactly what "assuming the worst" means here.
But OP is correct: this ISN'T the election yet. It's gonna be hard, but it's still UP TO US to make sure the fascists don't take complete control in November. Voting is the only peaceful option to stop them still.

After 10 years of knowing exactly where Trump and the GOP were coming from, and more importantly, where they want to go, I cannot POSSIBLY imagine any scenario coming out of the debate that would actually change ANY person's mind about who they are going to vote for. The lines have been long drawn.

Oh, SimEarth! Its addition/retention of Trichordates in the game had a profound impact on my later Speculative Xenobiology interests, as I had never even /heard/ of them before then. Trichordates even ended up being the basis of one of many alien species I'd create for later personal projects!

I mean, if I were /required/ to teach about the Bible in school, I definitely would, but I'm pretty sure Ryan here would not be pleased with the accurate story of the Bible that would be presented (as opposed to his rose-tinted-glasses interpretation of it).

Funny thing is, while most people (myself included) agree that there were a lot of ups and downs this season, I have hardly seen any real consensus on which episodes were the best and which were the worst. Everyone's personal rankings seem to be all over the board in comparison to each other.

Do you have a sizable proactive Mute or Block list? I'm not positive, but that /might/ occur if someone on one of those attempts to Follow you here (like the bot accounts that scour account names to add them automatically)...?

< I think streaming networks wanting short seasons is all profit-driven, so they can better gauge whether they're getting a good return on their investment or not. On the plus side, at least they're not dumping all episodes at once—which I think is even MORE harmful to a show than short seasons are.

I fear the 6-to-8-episodes-per-season (as we've seen with Netflix, Amazon, Disney, etc.) is the 'new normal' thanks to the desires of streaming, and I agree that it's a bad one, because it makes it real difficult to get decent storylines up and running or decent character arcs played out. >

Yeah, I gave Jodie's run a try, but the storylines just didn't work for me—I think maybe it was the fact that they had too many companions to juggle?
That said, I think Ncuti & Millie were both great in the new season, but the storylines/plots have really been a roller coaster of quality for me.

I personally don't feel that the emotional beats made up for the lack of internal structure, but I will admit that the actors pulled every ounce of excellence from those emotional moments, and those performances are what's going to keep me watching.

Yep. Ep9 was a shame, especially since Ep8 made me feel—for the first time in a long time—like I was a little kid again in the '80s staying up late to watch Doctor Who on MPT.
The writing has been a real roller coaster of quality for me this season, but luckily the actors are keeping me interested.

Sadly, algorithms are not in the business of getting you what YOU want—they are in the business of getting you what the ADVERTISER wants you to get.
If algorithms were actually oriented to what WE want to see, I'd never see another sports-related recommendation on Twitter again, yet there they are.

One of the nice things about Bluesky I like is the shared culture of "block early, block often." You don't owe bad-faith actors any of your time or energy. A lot of jerks came over from The Other Place and were immediately blocked by people seeing their game, leaving them in a little lonely bubble.

In fairness, we ARE talking about people who not only bought a Cybertruck, but who then ALSO bought the Cybertent add-on. That kind of presupposes a person who is more concerned with status and appearance than they are concerned with performance and utility.

Right? I mean, in theory, designing a tent that fits in the bed of a truck isn't something you have to somehow re-invent from Square One or anything. Even on the shrunken bed of a CT, it should be as simple as adjusting widths and lengths and heights of a tent design to fit.

< but in the short run, just grab a Doctor and/or writer/storyline you like and just roll with it for a bit. There's a huge number of options to choose from, going back over a half-century, so there's bound to be something for everyone along the way!

That's actually its strength, in a way. Because it has gotten to such an extraordinarily large number of episodes, it really doesn't matter much WHERE you hop in… sort of like The Simpsons. The 'incarnation' of the Doctor and the people he travels and fights against may change in the long run, >

Sadly, I think the 'streaming' mentality of keeping seasons to six or eight episodes (so they don't risk as much money) has really stifled potential story arcs.
On the plus side, at least they haven't been dumping _whole seasons_ at once, which I argue is a practice that has done even MORE harm.

^This. Also, a lot of people are still under the mistaken assumption that if you see an ad on someone's website, it's because the advertiser paid the website owners, and they put it there themselves. In reality, the majority of ads these days on the Big Sites are from a third-party ad services.

Yeah; IMHO, by far the worst of this season's episodes so far.
On the plus side, I've seen a lot of people's most/least favorite lists for this season, and they tend to be really all over the board, so I suppose that suggests that there's at least something for everyone somewhere in there!
