A hallmark of the reactionary movement against it was also police unions and departments and their political allies making the propaganda push that they will stop doing their jobs if citizens aren’t nicer to them. The behavior of a protection racket, not a taxpayer funded service

At least in NYC, they DID stop doing their jobs. As the money spent on police has risen every year, and our libraries are closed on weekends.

This of course was completely ignored by most local media. It was at a hearing on traffic safety, so Bike Portland is our new Paper of Record I Guess.

You see people *right now* blaming the “defund” movement for real or perceived rises in crime in areas that received increases in police funding during that time just because cops were demoralized I guess. SF cops openly ousted a DA by saying as much. And we’re supposed to empathize with the cops.
