Estonian he/him. Currently writing an MA thesis about Olaf Stapledon's "Last and First Men" (1930) subtly implying that his 'message from the future' was real, actually.

I see all that has gone before me and let it pass over me and through me. Where the context has gone there will be nothing. Only I remain.

Oh, good, the riot police are here. We'll get fucked up on soma gas and dance to Anti-Riot Song Number Two on the Synthetic Music Box, right? Right? (Surely they're not going to use tear gas and shoot my eye out with a rubber bullet...)

Sorry to unload like this but I keep my reading notes in a Blogger blog and it used to be easy to search for stuff there with "site:http..." and then Google as if decided that it's no longer goibg to do that. Blogger is their own product, it makes absolutely no sense that I have to use a Russian pi

I'm not proud of it but in desperariton, when I'm searching for something extremely specific and Google no longer shows it (even when it did before) I've had to turn to yandex.com in a pinch. These are unprecedented times. Google search worked perfectly for 20 years. How tf did they even mess it up

Tfw you search a title, be it a book or a paper, on DuckDuckGo and it gives you an endless list of results, one more disconnected than the last, whereupon you enter it into Google and despite everything get at least some useful results. I switched back from DDG recently because of this. Still mad.

Which basically amounts to saying: you're killing your brain if you don't eat anything and only drink alcohol. And that's pretty much obvious to everyone, I assume. Anyone with a brain, I guess, instead of Nvidia processors working on predictive text generation..

It's so funky watching ChatGPT regurgitate these urban legends because they've been repeated enough times. In actual science, they found out decades ago that alcohol does indeed hamper neurogenesis, new brain cells attaching, but only kills existing ones if alcohol is the only source of nutrition.

And the idea that some catastrophe needs to precede global spiritual awakening is part and parcel in Stapledon's thought, most vividly illustrated in his Odd John and Sirius both needing to *kill* before they realize their nature. He was very disappointed that neither WW-s lead to a New World Order.

In my own words: What you just said is a staple in science fiction studies: some sci-fi is indeed meant to show us aspirational technology. Stapledon's deal is that the Last Men sent us a future-history to inspire us to avoid the worst, e.g. stop burning fossil fuels, and not F around in other ways.

All the Star Trek history and interview books note that Rodenberry consulted Stapledon's works when he conceived of the Star Trek universe. I attached excerpts from John Kinnaird's *Olaf Stapledon* (1986): (1) sci-fi inspiring science, p. 42, and (2) necessity of WWIII before utopia, p. 70.

I've come around on LPOTL's serial killer and famous deaths episodes. There's usually something there to learn about how things used to work in the real world - investigation, media, etc. Whereas horror is what? Tricking your reptilian brain into being scared of monsters that don't exist? What for?

According to this, it will become less moderate, i.e. both colder and hotter, with wild fluctuations and extreme weather anomalies to boot. Europeans might get to experience tornadoes along the Baltic coast. UK, Noway and Denmark will definitely be extremely fucked.

Any idea where Olaf Stapledon got the idea that eventually (e.g. in 2 billion years) there might occur some sort of physical contagion that instigates stars to expand and explode, like it happens in his "Last and Fist Men"? Were there theories about this possibility before 1930? Asking just in case.

Originally, it's when you look at a painting and feel what the painter wanted the viewer to feel, or something like that. "Empathy" is only slightly over 100 years old (Tichener 1911). James Mark Baldwin had the better word for what we came to think of as empathy - he called it "sembling".

This made me remember Uwe Boll uploading hundreds of restaurant "reviews" to Youtube. All are him ranting for a few minutes about the food he just ate, on a dark street, right after finishing his meal and exiting the establishment. Anyone searching for reviews of his bad movies are swamped in these.
