While amusing, the reason felons can be president is so that the legal system can't be used as a political weapon. It's completely unfair that felons can't get a job, but the two circumstances aren't at all comparable.

4gb is so much memory. It feels wasteful that we barely optimize at all anymore in software. β€œJust throw money at it, it’s ultimately cheaper than taking the time to make it better.”

If perfection makes you happy, practice. You'll get better, faster, and more consistent at it. In the end, the time and energy will be nearly the same, but the result can be whatever you want it to be.

Marcellus Williams was cleared by DNA evidence and the prosecutor is trying to vacate the conviction, but the state of Missouri still scheduled an execution date for him. Please sign and share this petition

When the US found out the Russians might be a military threat, we achieved some staggeringly impossible breakthroughs. Economic competition with China could play out in similar fashion. Aliens? Could change everything.

Just because you don't want to see it doesn't mean it's not happening. If you start listening to the phrases being used toward "helping boys be responsible" or whatever and swapping the gender roles in your head, I think you'll have a better shot at understanding the problem.

Rust is the perfect analogy for a product that looks incredible but is actually impractical, hard to use, and unnecessary for most cases. If you really need bare-metal extreme performance, sure, but for almost everything else Rust can do, Go or C# are much more convenient without much perf loss.

The best part about Python is that it's not C. The worst part about Python is literally everything else. - package management - cpu - memory - disk - gil - what the hell kind of language takes 6 hours of runtime to figure out the cat walked on the keyboard before the last build?

Europe mostly does a great job with public transportation. The US does such a bad job, universally, it seems almost malicious. I'm all about fixing what's broken, but for now there has to be universal access without penalties or the rich will drive on clear roads and the poor will lose their jobs.

SCOTUS finally does something halfway decent. 95% of bsky is dead quiet, the rest are complaining that it's not good enough. Celebrate the wins where you can get them folks. It's a long fight.

You've got the right sentiment here, but they believe they're under attack. The constitution allows felons to be elected, in the event that hostile forces try to imprison their political enemies. Feels familiar, yeah? I think it's enough to say - As a friend and countryman, I think you can do better

Somewhat unrelated - other funding for public transit, several flavors of tax, have been soaring for years but not significantly improving the product. I'd be glad to see empty roads and full trains & busses, and to shovel money into it, but there's a lot of the latter and almost none of the former.

My city is one of them. The actual on the ground experience is like streaming video increasing ad content until the free tier is unwatchable, while the paid tiers get more and more expensive for the same experience. More traffic unless you pay, public transit didn't change.

Public transit doesn't just magically eat the capacity overnight. It sucked to begin with, and nobody wants to fund it to get better, which would take time anyway. Where did all those cars go? There's a big piece of the story missing.

But where did all the traffic go? How many people are waking up at 4am to take the bus because they can't otherwise afford to get to work?

In almost every conflict throughout history, the victorious banish the conquered. In each case, this strengthens their resolve. Modern society recognizes that diversity is power, that each person has something to offer, yet we make no place for people whose views we oppose. We will always be at war.

Is anyone else heartbroken that the Russians are being forced to fight and die in a war they're completely unprepared for? I'm pleased Ukraine is defending as well as they are, but the internal activity in Russia's operation seems more than a little inhumane on its own.

Where is the bar set for an item to deserve lore? The millennium falcon deserves every bit of the outpouring of love it's had over the years, what's to say there isn't a great story behind every strap of duct-tape holding that bucket together?
