“Many governments restrict or prohibit advertising for products that harm human health, like tobacco.
I urge every country to ban advertising from fossil-fuel companies.
And I urge news media and tech companies to stop taking fossil-fuel advertising.” - Antonio Guterres

Thank you! I should really have given some readings & cited your work too - will do that in Part III.
Yeah, some sensible ideas & stats mixed up with lazy mis-readings of the target articles & gross generalizations. Deflating!

in which i explain - at length - why the latest preprint from some so-called open science reformists is pseudo-scholarship.

Yeah, this is top of the list!
I try to put the axes up first, & explain them before the data appears. I even put 'good' & 'bad' labels on axes if it helps (eg, performance on test)
Across the talk/poster, use the same colour schemes & notations, same formats for graphs.
Minimise audience work!

one additional comment, after several days thinking:
Does "statistical challenges and misreadings" apply to the target article or is it a summary of the commmentary? Genuinely hard to tell.

in case it helps with any revision: my annotations on your commentary.
I found it problematic in a number of ways. this contribution does not increase my confidence in open science/reproducibility; it feels like the authors are dumping on a study to promote a particular approach.

Happy to go into more detail when i have some more time, but i did not like this approach to commentary.

I am not defending the target article, & have not read it. This was a difficult read. Many assumptions of the authors seem to have been imposed onto the target article. There's much to disagree with in specific places (eg: 'preregistered work is harder', N=84 is 'very small'; t>3 is a small effect).

1. Do all the controls
2. Be your worst critic: do harsh, critical work to refute your ideas
3. Don't exclude *any* data; model it
4. There are *no* statistical rules that apply in all situations (N, p, effect size etc) (apart from #3 ;-))

The UK does not formalise the 'counteroffer' process re: academic promotions. I'm sure that means it's all fine, right?

not seen this before: in an otherwise very good paper, some of the datapoints (on the right of this image) have been... shifted! likely a post-plotting image editing problem.
(symbols are different group means, dotted lines show 95%CIs on log scale, offset from means so all data can be seen)

I'm 7/8ths of the way through extracting data for a #TMS #meta-analysis (~400 studies). I originally planned to be finished in November (2023).

Yeah, that's my guess, bit i am no expert on T-ES literature or methods (tdcs, trns, tacs).
At least we know that TMS can effectively stimulate the brain (it can and does induce seizure). But effective stimulation is even argued about for T-ES.

🤔 How hard is it to run a successful crowdsourced peer review platform?
😮 Well, PubMed Commons failed (.02% replies).
It reminds me of recent platforms that have failed or caught minimal attention. Solving post-publication peer review requires creative thinking.

No comment your honour!
I've only ever looked at cog-neuro/psychophysics & physiology papers (of which there are 000s), & have stayed well clear of 'plasticity' & therapeutic applications - I'm super-skeptical by default, & if problematic, that tanker would take a lot of turning 🙈🙉🙊...
Cheers!

Effect size for interfering with tactile *discrimination* with TMS over S1 is large and consistent across experiments.
For interfering with tactile *detection* it is small-to-medium & less consistent (highest heterogeneity).
A wider meta-analysis of well-controlled studies is needed.
cheers!
