Also, though, where is this mythical psych ward with free beds for all the homeless people the cops drop off? There’s no level on which letting police commit people involuntarily makes sense.

California has about 10k psych beds total, about half acute and half subacute, and 181k chronically unhoused people. It's $301k per bed per year to house someone in a subacute facility. Insert <can someone good at math help me budget this, my family is dying> meme

That’s not really an argument against them existing though. There’s too many people out there who literally cannot take care of themselves and don’t have anyone in their lives willing or able to do so

the uh. . . the amount of stories where an evil scientist and/or corporate ceo kidnaps homeless people to do experiments on them is uh well its just a fantasy right?

and the irony is that reagan closed a lot of the wards in the early 80s, which led to a surge in homelessness

They now have psych rooms in ERs that are basically solitary confinement. They’re involuntarily committing women for asking nurses to wear masks, having hard-to-solve medical issues, or for crying too much when they’re In excruciating pain. Fun times.

I work with family members of people with serious mental illness. This is a more complex issue than you suggest here.
