In fact this phrase predates automobile travel. In its original incarnation, "gas" meant a good time (see also "Jumpin Jack Flash" 1968). An "ass," or donkey, was an absolute requirement to propel the primitive vehicle. And of course you'd need the grass to feed the donkey.

I’m not saying that you as an individual have to forgive wrongdoing. Absolutely not. I’m not the person with that kind of attitude. But in general, overall, a community has to have some kind of way for the wrongdoers to repair or return. Or else people feel too tightly held. You lose your community
