This is reminding me of something I read long ago about SFF reading protocols; the SFF reading style is much more willing to hold a sort of blank space around an unfamiliar term or concept and fill it in later, while a literary reader will assume a metaphor or get stuck on unfamiliar vocabulary.

I haven’t read that story, but given it as a first line, I might wonder why the shadows were golden and expect to find out later: Magic? Unusual light source? Pollen on the ground? Perhaps this is from the viewpoint of a character who has particular emotional associations with gold and/or shadows?

2. Nothing has to happen today. I get a lot of mileage out of writing things down — when I’m up and buzzing with plans, I can write them down, when I come back down and can evaluate them more clearly I can pick out the good ones, when I’m up again I have things to do I already know are a good idea.

Ain’t that always the way! I think the most important thing to know about potential bipolar is that getting enough sleep is REALLY IMPORTANT and if, as a student, she’s running into pressure to pull all-nighters or otherwise skimp on sleep for homework, she should absolutely not do that.
