Gene Roddenberry was a cop for a while for the notoriously corrupt LAPD, and serving under the often overly logical and emotionless Chief Parker (don’t lionize him, he abused his wife) was the direct inspiration for Spock

Parker was also an early champion of producer Jack Webb, who produced the "Dragnet" franchise at his instigation. Also Jack Webb and Gene Roddenberry were both Army Air Corps recruits, Webb was rejected from selection but Roddenberry served as a B-17 pilot and was later a check airman for Pan Am.

In between flying B-17s and becoming a Pan Am pilot, Roddenberry was a crash investigator for the USAAF. He was in three plane crashes between the three phases of his aeronautical career (though he was only the pilot for one of them), the last one being a Pan Am crash in the Syrian desert.
