I think the surest sign of Critic Brain is that I’d rather encounter something interestingly bad rather than predictably good. Let people enjoy things? Mister I won’t even let myself enjoy things

I would agree with this on principle but I think it’s just too easy to find things that are interestingly good!

I enjoy the interestingly bad. It's that cocktail of rubbernecking at a car wreck and schadenfreude that makes it time well spent.

I feel a little better that my childhood dream of being a record reviewer never came true. (Just as well, considering the state of publishing and music, not to mention publishing *about* music. Things were so different they were called "records." But still.)

This is why I enjoy flipping around on antenna TV, where interestingly bad films can pop up at any time

I have this strange thing were if something is good then I pay MUCH more attention to it, probably watch/read it more than once and think about it a tonne - resulting in being that much more able to critique it...

To an extent I feel like it's a comfort having some things be predictable and good.

I guess... if it's too predicable, it doesn't feel very entertaining and therefore isn't good?

I was a full time film critic for a few years and when you see every movie that comes out you quickly understand the truism that it doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad as long as it’s different.

This is especially true with horror/thriller. People would rather a goofy snake puppet chomping folks in to a red mist than a killer with a deep back story

This makes browsing Netflix original content a grim process. They seem to think that competent = greatness. Instead it's just excruciating.
