People really need to start rallying around these movements to do things that have to be done even if they don't seem possible given current circumstances. Rallying around ideas is what MAKES them possible. "The people demand impeachment" makes it easier for politicians to make it happen.

You could also call up your US rep and demand they join AOC in this move for impeachment. Can't pass the R House, but they HAVE to use their bully pulpit and rally the public. www.nydailynews.com/2024/07/01/a...

I just finished calling my senators and representative. It took me maybe 15 minutes, including looking up their phone numbers. Take the time to give yours a call. If you hate phone calls, make a script for yourself first and then just read it.

Do not, ever, criticize how someone else gives help. Don't y'all at someone who fosters cats just because people are dying somewhere else. Other folks are all doing what we can, and if that person can help cats? Well, cats need help, too. So do trees, waterways, library archives, you name it.

That's my point here. Do what YOU can. Other people do what they can. Everyone cleans up their tiny corner. Everyone pulls the tiny lever they can pull. We all do this. Don't you see? That's the *point*. We all have to do what small things we can. Do not despair. Do not, I beg of you, despair.

Speaking as a semanticist, it's wild to me that they are phrasing it in terms of whether an *act* is characterized as "official", when what they seem to actually be talking about is whether there exists a *description* of the act that can be characterized as "official".

oh, you might say, the president can’t issue corrupt pardons. ah. but john roberts says that not only can he issue corrupt pardons, but if he tells his staff they are corrupt in the course of issuing them, that evidence is inadmissible in the event that you could somehow prosecute the corruption

I am disheartened that many, if not all, EDU and GOV accounts remain on X and not here where many of the scientists hang out. It's good to not be in a bubble and to engage all audiences, but the world on X seems so toxic at this point that it is arguably an even worse type of bubble.

It's important to note that this single-post analysis above is entirely consistent with a much more comprehensive analysis by @ketanjoshi.co showing that changes in the X algorithm and moderation policies that began in Oct 2022 have massively favoured trolls and penalized climate scientists.

I already invite people on X to join us here weekly. But thanks to this analysis, I've decided to re-create my "scientists who do climate" list here this summer, and manually invite each of the 3,000 members on X to join us. If you're still on X, pls consider inviting your followers to join us too!

Since I had such a large sample (nearly a hundred), I analyzed X comments by category. 47% said climate wasn't changing, I was lying, ignorant, or not really a scientist 15% said I was in it for the $ 14% were insults Content warning: Please don't read the fine print if you're sensitive.

There was an even bigger difference in the comments received. All on Threads and all but one here were positive, constructive, or neutral (one person was just being a jerk, not a troll). Only 18% on X were positive or neutral. The rest were negative, many highly so.

I've met white people who genuinely wondered how bad it is/could possibly be. However, I already knew they had very low empathy + poor imagination. Thinking from others' perspectives was a big stretch for them in general. All to say, I think those kinds of white folks do exist but aren't the norm.

this entire crusade against diversity in hiring and admissions is based on the supposition that all white men are necessarily more qualified than any nonwhite person or woman who might be considered for the job. like, this lawsuit more or less states that outright.

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

very interesting. The president is now telling doctors to defy the law in order to provide emergency abortions. If the White House and Biden decide to actually play hardball, there’s a chance he might win the election. Big ifs here with massive implications but, we are living in historic times.

No one pays me to be a librarian anymore (by my choice, because I was old enough to retire so I did). I heartily recommend public librarianship as a career if you care about democracy and / or community. I now content myself with volunteering at my last Library's Foundation.

Hi everyone! One *extremely meaningful* thing you can do to fight back is to join library boards. Usually this is an appointed position, not elected. The time commitment for most public library board members is 1-2 hours monthly. I'm a former library director. Ask me anything.
