I think it's really extremely interesting that the US experienced what was essentially a military coup in 2020 and nobody ever mentions it. Sure, Trump called for Gen. Milley to be executed, because of course he did. But the coup wasn't the reason he gave.

We know we don't have much time left so we've been spending a lot of time with America for its last birthday. Plenty of hugs, taking pictures. My niece is in film school, and got the camera out and interviewed it about what it was like growing up, just trying to record memories while we have them.

It's socialism, but socialism while retaining all of capitalism economic and social relations. The idea that, say, the state would provide services to the people because the people deserved them, and serving the people is the purpose of the state, was never on the table.

Which was certainly a theme in American government at the time, too: if we didn't throw some scraps to the urban poor they'd burn the cities down. And the carrots were coupled with sticks like sending the draft-age males to Vietnam (which is why there's a forever war in 334).

This was a running theme in SF of the time. See Thomas M. Disch's 334. It was less "socialism is bad" as it was "authoritarian state uses socialism to provide the bare minimum necessary to prevent the poor from rebelling."

Actually now that I'm remembering it, it's game shows _with_ ads that you can pay not to see. He claims that he's exempt because he's having sex, but the bed tells him that it knows how much he weighs. This is one of the most speed-fueled books in his oeuvre.

The only jobs LLMs are capable of automating are things where the quality of the output doesn't matter, like generating SEO-optimized bullshit web sites. I mourn no one who gets pushed out of that job by a machine, but I do hate that machines make it easier for that shit to proliferate.
