It's #OrcaActionMonth & #FunFactFriday. #DYK Orcas can be found in and around every island in the Galapagos year-round but they are very unpredictable? They are seen in small groups, never larger than 10 individuals. They seem to be generalist hunters, preying on sea lions, turtle, rays & fish.

#OrcaFacts: Though socially distinct now, it is highly likely that the populations of KWs in Iceland & Norway were once one super-population specializing in herring. Unfortunately, since the collapse of the Atlanto-Scandian herring stock there have been no records of interaction.

In 2018 a genetic study revealed that J1's mother was in fact L45 "Asterix." Similar to L87 "Onyx," Ruffles was an L Pod whale who spent his time with J Pod. While this discovery was unexpected, it is also just another way that these animals continue to surprise us.

It's #OrcaActionMonth & #FunFactFriday J1 โRufflesโ was an iconic member of J pod & was well known for his enormous waved dorsal fin that gave him his name He spent most of his time J2 โGrannyโ & because of their close relationship, researchers thought J1 was the last calf of J2.

#OrcaFacts: Killer Whale mothers are in it for the long haul. They are pregnant for an incredible 15-18 months, will nurse their calves for ~2 years & in many cases itโs believed that their young swim the rest of their lives by their side.

Its #FunFactFriday & #OrcaActionMonth #DYK Norwegian KWs can be observed feeding on large bait balls of Atlantic herring? KWs will work together to bring herring to the surface & herd them into a ball. They will use their tail flukes to slap the herring & feed on the stunned prey
