Of course both these things are annoying but the idea that this is worse than 2009 is insane. Are you aware that’s possible to go many months, even years, with NO job, NO health insurance? There are worse things than paying fees or facing bureaucratic gaps in coverage as you upgrade your job

Every one of these arguments seems rooted in the conflation of absolute and relative assessments. “Things are good” vs “things are better”. Wish we could get beyond that.

yes but these takes read as a bizarro world knowyourmeme.com/memes/old-ec...

sure it's better than before, but what's the purpose in pushing this as a narrative? seems to me it's 1) splitting hairs, to scold folks w real needs, and 2) ignores things are not great over the long term (right?)

Pre-ACA, that gap in your health insurance could have led to you having pre-existing conditions your new insurance would not cover. I was concerned about that when switching jobs in 2011, but fortunately, my new insurance had a 45 day grace period for lapses in coverage.

There’s been an enormous decline in the quality of freely available information since 2009. Most good reporting is now paywalled and those pubs have more bad reporting AND social media is more tuned to boost deceit.

In 1999, I quit my job and moved to a new city without a new job. I had to pay COBRA for months until I got a job that included health insurance. We paid fees to apply for apartments then too. I think it was $35 dollars, which should be fairly equivalent to $75 now. And I’d do it all again!

This does make me feel like a boomer a little bit, but the way some Gen z seem to regard the frustrations attendant to being employed at the lower end of the job market as the worst thing anyone has ever faced is pretty grating, since they’re, like, kinda opening the door to fascism because of it

For one thing, we have the ACA! This person can buy a plan on their state exchange for a month to fill the gap between jobs! I have been renting apartments since 1992 and have had to pay application fees about 50% of the time. This is not new. Extractive and exploitative sure, but hardly novel.
