It’s time for a hot take to dislodge the discourse. The Last Continent is actually the best Rincewind book and, with some mild editing of the worst run-on scenes, removal of the entire “sick Librarian” plot, and a bit of polish, would be a fine Discworld entry overall.

“Maybe the candidate himself should mention it” The candidate’s social media accounts, interviews, and stump speeches have been doing very little else since shortly after the debate, in what was clearly a planned transition. The candidate IS mentioning it. The VP IS mentioning it. Srsly

I'm tired of the in-fighting, and have therefore accepted the Democratic nomination for POTUS. My platform: 1) The Beekeeper, for real. 2) Automatic revocation, retroactive 10 years, of non-profit status for any religious entity if an official is convicted of a sex crime. 3) Normal lib stuff.

I learned more about her work, plus what she loves about the island.

I think there's also a split around the news media; a lot of folks involved with, eg, trans rights had already priced in reporters printing sensational lies to get kudos in the group chat.

At the size of the largest businesses in the US, there is no “economy of scale” benefit to consolidation. They are at maximum economy of scale. They’re already behemoths. The benefit of consolidation is just that fewer people get a choice, and so they get all the money.

I was allergic to peanuts over 30 years ago and still am. And there were kids back then who thought it was *hilarious* to sneak some into my lunch and watch me freak out. Guessing these wonderful folks in your screenshot would've been in that crowd.

So I want to talk about this from the perspective of someone who does professional fact checking as part of my work. For some years now I have been paid to check TV and written content themed around animals to make sure it is factually accurate. Chat GPT & AI has made that job so much harder.

That it might ever get to that point was a core aspect to the dispute! And like I said, the top Dem in the Senate was on activists’ side on this one. But other factions wanted to see both fail, and here we are.

Judges are an especially touchy point with Senate leadership because activists - and Senate Leader Reid - were very vocal about the need to play hardball in 06-14, and Senior Senators (esp Durbin & Feinstein) & Rahm Emanuel resisted so as to not be seen to be pressured.

It's worth considering why the media - with many outlets funded by or directly owned by oil interests - does so many stories about difficulties of long road trips in EVs and so few about how you can fill your car up at home and never visit a gas station or charger ever. bsky.app/profile/tom4...

I’ve seen people responding to this as though either OP is criticizing the child or as a reason to criticize “this generation.” And both of these takes are nonsense. Kids are using ChatGPT this way because this is also how adults are using it, and this is about how it is a dangerously bad tool

And then CBC follows up with a "why the French election was actually a huge victory for the far right even though they came in third" piece that's just barely this side of "voting against fascists is unfair". Both top stories.

God the CBC politics coverage today is terrible. What I'm going to assume is Markusoff treating Danielle Smith's dental tantrum as if she's making a serious request and has the power to do anything (it's not and she does not).

“If voting changed anything, they’d make it illegal” is a cool and catchy saying among smug non-voters, and it would make a lot more sense if not for the reality of widespread gerrymandering and voter suppression.

And totally leaves aside all the other ways to try to thwart people using their votes, like the grand California traditions of “deceptively worded ballot measures” and “sixteen candidates all trying to sound like they’re the real progressive when half of them are literally militia chuds”.

I wrote this in 2017, shortly after Macron's 1st win.

I said: Macron is so open about being hostile to Left, that it salvages a huge path for the broad left to be an alternative... if it manages to unite.

Few things I've ever written have aged so well.

Unfortunately it takes really powerful election laws to prevent conservative parties from using “perpetual campaign” tactics anyway; here in Canada, Doug Ford and Poilievre both use their fat stacks of cash to run campaign rallies and advertising year round, despite theoretically short elections.

Speaking right now: Eric Ciotti. Remember him? He was head of LR/right a month ago, when he unilaterally decided to ally with RN/far-right. His party rushed to throw him out. He won reelection. But a big loser tonight since he threw away his leadership but didn't win power.
