That makes sense. Part of the audiobook biz is that rights to book recordings often aren’t perpetual, they have limited terms. That’s why books that used to be in my Audible library occasionally disappear completely or a new edition with a different narrator appears. That happened with Shogun.

Geez, I wasn’t aware of that. I listened to R.C.’s outstanding narration on Audible when it first came out. I checked & it’s been replaced by Wheaton’s. I suspect the usual motive.

I finally had enough. I canceled my @nytimes subscription today. I have been reading it regularly for more than 50 years & there are things I like about the paper, but paying $25 month to get pissed off by their moronic coverage of domestic & foreign politics wasn’t worth it.

The NYT is notorious for clickbait headlines that oversell the reporting. This is the exact opposite. The whole thing is just stunning. This should be a gift link - worth reading this one start to finish.

Had a chuckle with “MAD,” a Tollywood “college daze” buddy pic. Cliques, freshman hazing, oddball profs etc. Seems to be a cottage industry shooting genre films like this set on ready to use college campuses. Extremely rapid fire dialogue makes it hard too keep up with subtitles đŸ„”Netflix đŸŽ„DesiWatchđŸŽ„

Watched episode 1 of 3rd season of “Panchayat” on Amazon & happy to report the high standards of this comedy/drama set in a rural village in Uttar Pradesh have been upheld. The journey of hapless secretary of the local Panchayat office, Abhishek & the zany cast of characters rolls on. 😊 đŸŽ„DesiWatchđŸŽ„

I enjoyed the way they worked in unique aspects of the city of Paris (I won’t spoil it). Plot absurdities are part of the fun. Characters are totally committed. Spectacular shark action.

I went into it figuring, oh well, just another shark movie, from France no less. But “Under Paris” blew my socks off. JAWs Redux. Pays homage to the original, but stands on its own. Great use of unique aspects of “The City of Light” as a setting. đŸ‡«đŸ‡·đŸ—ŒđŸŠˆđŸŽ„ ⭐⭐⭐⭐

1st time I’ve listened to @joeabercrombie.bsky.social & I’m really enjoying “The Blade Itself” audiobook. Very funny, character driven dark comedy fantasy set in a GoT kinda world - but still very original. Another outstanding narration by Steven Pacey vividly brings the characters to life.

The prominent role of the kamikaze pilot and his burden from the War was unexpected and touching, adding a very human context. The film is set is in an unvarnished Japanese cultural context without concessions for Westerners. Nice touches of humor. And of course awesome SFX!

Oh I have no doubt about that. He’s been one of the prime promoters elevating Subhas Chandra Bose to replace Gandhi in the pantheon.

Watching some of the recent ultra nationalist films revising Indian history, you’d never know Gandhi even existed, let alone playing a key role in the drive for independence.

Here’s an outstanding review of Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel “The Left Hand of Darkness” a marvelous book that transcends the SiFi genre. Published in 1969 it delves into gender, culturalism, nationalism and human relationships in a way that makes it highly relevant to this day. A must read or listen.

Just finished “Disquiet Gods” audiobook by Christopher Ruocchio Vol 6 in his “Sun Eater” SF/Fantasy series. These books are gaining popularity so fast publishers can’t keep them in stock. See reviews of them on YouTube. Compared to Dune, but much more. Thought provoking, erudite & entertaining. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It seems like there are an inordinate number of posts on Bluesky lately from people who, unbidden, preemptively skeet that they don’t like something that is popular with many other folks, with little or no rationale. Like “I don’t listen to audiobooks!” A cry for attention?

Has a very fertile imagination. A born writer. Well defined characters. Reminds me of Adrian Tchaikovsky in that he can turn out a considerable amount of fiction without missing a beat. Likes taking chances & pushing boundaries. I’d prefer more brevity, but that’s my common complaint in SiFi/Fantasy

I agree with your review. Bear in mind that Ruochio was only 22 when it was published, so there’s some “kitchen sinking.” A young author feverishly throwing everything into the hopper to succeed at their trade. I’m into vol 7. He matures as a writer, although at times he’s still overly verbose. 😏

“Fasces” were on the reverse of the Mercury dime. “A bundle of rods with a projecting axe blade, carried by a lictor in ancient Rome as a symbol of a magistrate's power, and used as an emblem of authority in Fascist Italy.” Mussolini appropriated it as a symbol of strength for this Party.

Starting when I was a kid, Roger Corman produced and or directed more memorable films that I saw over the years than any other individual. Films like “House of Usher” & “Pit and the Pendulum” scared me senseless & introduced me to Poe & horror. And the early SiFi films motivated me to read more SF.

Late to the party, but have to recommend Christopher Ruochio’s “Sun Eater“ series. I’m 4 vols into the audiobooks. The 1st was published when he was only 22 & his craft has developed prodigiously with each one. Very engaging. Natural story teller. Erudite. Been compared to Dune, but highly original.

I am a regular consumer of Audible audiobooks & average 2-3 titles a month. I have yet to see an AI narrated book either recommended to me by Audible or show up in any searches I do myself for new listens. I found a sample AI narration on Amazon.com. At best, equivalent to a very unskilled human.

I feel you pain but typically it’s the audiobook’s producer/director working for the audio publisher that’s ultimately responsible for pronunciations, not the narrator. The narrator is voice talent, not an expert on pronunciations. Pronunciation guides are essential, as well as QCing after recording

I don’t see a downside for me for Audible.com recommending some audiobooks based on what I watch on Amazon Prime TV. Both services already make recommendations based on what I access & I’ve found that very useful. It’ll be interesting to see if they come up with anything I didn’t already know about.
