But, in the end, I think we are all swimming in the same muck.

And I think I was trying to deliberately trying to distinguish low-info voters from people who are not as media savvy in my first reply.

I guess my position, in part, is formed by the belief that we may *all* be more susceptible to media spin than we realize. The paradox is that the media often seems to frame it in these horse-race, inside-baseball terms, for their “savvy” audience, as if they are not, in so doing, engaging in spin.

“Obviously, we see the field for what it is, but they may be able to convince voters…” Buddy, the voter is me. Presumably it is also you. What conversation are we even having here?

I know low-info voters exist, but when people talk like this, I feel like they are suffering under a delusion that “the electorate” is some vague entity distinct from (and dumber than) themselves and their audience — as opposed to literally being all of us, collectively.

Have they ever owned a copy of a book in their lives? You know what, scratch that. Stupid question. How about a DVD? I know it must have been long, long ago, but surely they must have realized that that didn’t mean they *owned* the IP.

I’ll bite: Good translation is an art in its own right, and infinitely different from transcription by a bot. Returning to the original example, if the barrier is ESL, I’d much rather students read a version of Gatsby in their own language, translated with the care and attention of a human.

This one was a Gaza protest, not climate change, but yes.

This might apply to the entire cohort, because this is basically my experience as a late millennial as well. Though, still calling it a “wall” might typify elder millennialhood. 🤷‍♂️

True, true. I at least know that on an intellectual level, but it’s always easy to be forgetful about things outside my own lived experience. Still … I suspect we spent more cumulative time in front of those computers. Esp. given what you say about some people only having access via friends.

We had it in elementary school. Maybe that was too young, maybe they also just didn’t devote *that* much time to it. But I suspect the bigger factor is growing up with the internet. We were typing more, earlier, independently, and couldn’t be as easily broken of our own intuitive typing styles.

Yup. This particular example is nothing new. They’ve been this level of dangerous for quite some time.

Oops, must not have read your whole comment through. You already mentioned COVID. In that case, I’ll just add that it also mitigates the risk of *other* things besides alcohol being slipped in.

I think that’s definitely the idea! Plus the pathogen transmission factor — these kids being very impacted by COVID. Of course, individualization means the danger can literally vary on a case by case basis. As ever, I’m sure it’s still very easy for young people to underestimate certain risks.

“Virtually” is the most direct synonym for this usage. It triggers such counter-pedantry in me when other pedants complain that people are using it to mean “figuratively.” Nope. That doesn’t quite cover it.

It is and it isn’t. I once got into a little bit of a back and forth with people on r/millennials over this. Of course folks have made mixed drinks with similar ingredients for a long time. But, as you state, those were often in communal bowls. The whole point of these is the individualization.

What yours and Holmes’ takes have in common is that, hey, theaters! There’s something broken in your business model! People don’t have enough incentive to buy in at the level you want them to! (2/2)

OK. And yet, movie theaters still *treat* concessions as an essential part of the movie going experience. It’s a self-serving framing on their part, yes, and, as you point out, it’s possible — fairly easy, even — to circumvent. (1/2)

One of the most dangerous things in all of history is we don’t need to follow the law, we answer to a higher law, one known and interpreted exclusively by us, that just happens to align with our impulses. So much violence caused by various versions of that belief.

The student journalists covering the protests on their respective campuses have been consistently so much better than major national news publications. Wild to think how few jobs are available for those student journalists once they graduate.

It's demented we have both a medication to help manage opioid abuse and a medication that can bring someone overdosing back to life but have not deployed these in their totality because some folks are still asking if people who use drugs morally deserve it

For the record, this is a reference to The Anatomy of a Fall, and the image is from that movie. Just for anyone who may be wary of clicking after Bluesky flagged and hid it.

It's good that you did that. Maybe try to keep doing it. Especially when you're talking about these people. Especially when the material might be controversial. These are just people. Video essays have become a legitimate medium. Give yourself the respect of treating professionalism as standard.

YouTube video essayists are like: "I couldn't find any information about this online, so, guys, I did something WILD. I actually emailed Big Important Person with direct involvement/expertise in the subject. And then ... they TALKED to me!" This is basic research. You did a journalism.
